Job description

About SGS

SGS is the global leader in inspection, verification, testing, and certification services, setting the benchmark for quality and integrity worldwide. With a workforce exceeding 89,000 employees and over 2,600 offices and laboratories, SGS operates across diverse industries globally.

Role Overview

We are seeking an accomplished Lead Electrical Commissioning Engineer to contribute to a significant Tier III / AI Data Center project based in Saudi Arabia. The role demands extensive expertise in electrical testing and commissioning within large-scale or hyperscale Data Centers, focusing particularly on high-voltage power systems and critical infrastructure.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Take charge of electrical testing and commissioning stages encompassing equipment inspections, individual and integrated system testing, culminating in final project handover.
  • Supervise the commissioning processes of high, medium, and low voltage electrical systems including substations, transformers, switchgear, UPS units, generators, ATS, and power distribution networks.
  • Develop, review, and implement commissioning methodologies such as procedures, test plans, method statements, risk assessments, and documentation.
  • Lead or coordinate Integrated Systems Testing (IST), including conducting simulations for utility failures, generator and UPS failure scenarios, load-transfer tests, and power-path redundancy breakdowns.
  • Manage and coordinate black-building tests alongside comprehensive reliability assessments of electrical systems.
  • Authenticate protection relay tests, ensure proper electrical protection coordination and verify system redundancies and operational robustness.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams spanning mechanical, Building Management Systems (BMS), Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), fire and life safety systems, ICT, and others to ensure unified system performance.
  • Oversee the resolution of commissioning challenges through investigations, corrective measures, documentation, and ultimately ensure seamless project handover.
  • Maintain compliance with project technical specifications, applicable electrical standards, safety protocols, and Data Center reliability criteria.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • A minimum of 12 years professional experience in electrical engineering with a specialization in testing and commissioning.
  • Proven practical experience commissioning Tier III or Tier IV and hyperscale Data Centers.
  • Expertise in the design and commissioning of HV, MV, and LV electrical infrastructures including substations, transformers, switchgear, UPS systems, generators, and ATS configurations.
  • Hands-on experience in Integrated Systems Testing, failure-mode simulations, load-transfer procedures, and black-building assessments.
  • Experience conducting protection relay testing and coordinating electrical protections to guarantee power-system integrity and reliability.
  • Competency in managing commissioning processes, leading cross-functional teams, and independently addressing technical challenges.
  • Excellent skills in technical documentation, communication, and stakeholder engagement.

Preferred Additional Experience

  • Involvement in large-scale or hyperscale Data Center projects with a specific focus on AI Data Center infrastructure.
  • Experience leading Level 6 Integrated Systems Testing in line with project commissioning standards.
  • Familiarity with redundant power configurations, particularly N+1 and 2N setups.
  • Engagement with commissioning authorities, consultants, contractors, and equipment manufacturers.
