Lead Data Engineer

Position Overview

The Lead Data Engineer will spearhead the design, construction, deployment, and enhancement of scalable data platforms and engineering solutions on cloud infrastructure. These solutions enable analytics, business intelligence, and data-informed decision-making for Group Digital. This role offers technical leadership, promotes best engineering practices, ensures secure, high-performing data systems, and supports the continuous development of the organization's data environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead creation and optimization of scalable cloud-based data platforms, data lakes, and pipelines that support Group Digital projects.
• Design, build and maintain robust ETL/ELT workflows leveraging SQL, Python, and modern cloud tools to consolidate data from various internal and external sources.
• Develop and fine-tune data models, storage solutions, and processing architectures focused on performance, scalability, dependability, and cost-effectiveness.
• Set and enforce data engineering standards, best coding practices, thorough documentation, and governance within the team.
• Work closely with Business Intelligence, Product, Technology, Commercial, Marketing, and Content teams to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions.
• Ensure data quality, security, and compliance through continuous monitoring, validation, and governance measures.
• Support analytics, reporting, dashboards, and self-service BI by providing reliable and trusted datasets.
• Enhance cloud infrastructure and database operations to boost system availability and efficiency.
• Diagnose and resolve complex data platform issues to minimize business disruptions.
• Mentor and guide Data Engineers, fostering knowledge sharing and ongoing skill development.
• Lead technical decisions and promote engineering best practices across the Data Engineering team within Group Digital.
• Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, vendors, and technology partners to align data engineering initiatives with business goals.
• Participate in Agile processes including sprint planning, backlog refinement, code reviews, testing, deployment, and continuous improvements.
• Ensure compliance with enterprise data governance, security, architectural, and regulatory standards.

Educational and Professional Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, or related fields.
• A Master’s degree or relevant cloud certifications such as Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer or Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect is beneficial.
• At least 7 years of progressive experience in Data Engineering or related data platform development roles.
• Proven track record designing and implementing enterprise-scale data platforms and cloud-native data solutions.
• Experience providing technical leadership and mentoring engineering teams.
• Hands-on expertise with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or comparable cloud technologies.
