Lab Technologist

Duties and Responsibilities

• Set up laboratory equipment by retrieving, positioning, connecting cables, and powering devices.
• Ensure all hardware and software are functioning correctly before use.
• Calibrate and make necessary adjustments to equipment prior to experimental sessions.
• Perform trial runs to establish and improve new procedures and setups.
• Diagnose equipment issues and coordinate repairs or replacements as needed.
• Clean, disassemble, and securely store equipment after each use.
• Support academic staff in experiment design, implementation, and in sourcing and testing new lab apparatus.

Design Lab Specific Duties

• Assist in procurement processes and liaise with vendors for maintenance and servicing of shared laboratory equipment.
• Handle financial documentation and submit claims related to lab operations and upkeep.
• Maintain an up-to-date inventory of laboratory equipment, including shared resources.
• Contribute to lab safety management and assist with safety certification audits within the shared premises.
• Perform additional lab-related tasks as assigned, including supporting lab classes and training new users on testing machines.

Qualifications and Skills

• Diploma or Bachelor's degree in robotics, systems control, mechatronics, automation, or a related field.
• Proficient knowledge in ROS, Python programming, Linux environment, electrical/electronic circuits, motion control boards, sensors, actuators, and computer networking.
• Minimum of one year practical experience through work or hands-on projects covering most of the required skills.
• Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
• Capable of independent work as well as effective team collaboration.
• Eagerness to acquire new skills and undertake additional responsibilities.
• Competent in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Familiarity with laboratory safety management is beneficial.
• Knowledge of 3D printing and machining, along with experience using computers and workstations, is advantageous.
