Role Summary
The Junior Somm position is a full-time, onsite role located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This role supports the sommelier team by assisting with floor wine service, helping guests navigate wine selections, and ensuring thoughtful pairings that enhance the menu. Daily duties include maintaining and updating wine lists, aiding in inventory management and stock rotation, and assisting with staff education on wine knowledge and service excellence. The Junior Somm works closely with both bar and kitchen teams to elevate the beverage experience, participates in tastings, and helps cultivate an environment that values continuous learning and hospitality.
Qualifications
- Basic understanding of wine, with enthusiasm for ongoing education and familiarity with common grape varieties, wine regions, and styles.
- Previous experience in restaurant or bar service roles, demonstrating excellent guest interaction and the ability to offer accessible wine recommendations.
- Strong attention to detail for duties such as managing inventory, updating menu offerings, and maintaining cleanliness and organization in storage areas.
- Effective and professional communication skills to collaborate seamlessly with front-of-house and kitchen staff.
- Physical stamina to remain on feet for long periods, carry wine cases, and navigate a busy service environment efficiently.
- Willingness to work flexible shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays in line with hospitality industry demands.
- Formal wine education credentials like WSET or CMS are advantageous, or a strong commitment to pursuing such certifications.
- Dedicated to providing inclusive and respectful service while eager to learn and develop professionally within the company.
