Job Overview

The role of a Fiber Splicer, also known as a Fiber Optic Technician, involves connecting individual fiber optic cable strands to ensure uninterrupted data transmission in telecom and broadband networks. This position encompasses tasks related to both outdoor Outside Plant (OSP) and indoor Inside Plant (ISP) installations.

Core Responsibilities

• Prepare fiber optic cables by stripping, cleaving, and cleaning fine loose tube and ribbon types.
• Carry out accurate fusion splicing, using heat to fuse glass ends, or mechanical splicing techniques.
• Install fiber networks by mounting splice enclosures, pulling aerial cables on poles, and managing underground or underfloor cables.
• Test and verify signal quality using devices such as Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDR), power meters, and light sources, ensuring compliance with industry light-loss standards.
• Identify and repair network faults including cable breaks, conducting cutovers and mid-sheath repairs on live circuits.
• Interpret technical schematics, blueprints, and fiber layouts, documenting splicing diagrams, test results, and daily work reports meticulously.
• Adhere rigorously to safety protocols including OSHA standards, particularly when working at heights or within confined spaces.

Required Skills & Tools

• Expertise using fusion splicers, precision cleavers, mechanical splice fixtures, and optical testing instruments.
• Strong manual dexterity and keen eyesight to handle delicate glass fibers without damage.
• Ability to read and understand complex fiber color codes, engineering drawings, and maps.
• Physical capability to work outdoors in varying weather, climb poles, lift heavy equipment, and maneuver in confined areas.

Qualifications & Experience

• Minimum educational background includes a High School Diploma, ITI certification, or Diploma in Electronics/Telecommunications.
• Experience ranging from 1 to 3+ years in fiber splicing and network fault troubleshooting is preferred; apprenticeship and entry-level candidates may also be considered.
• Certification such as Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) or equivalent vendor-specific credentials are advantageous.
• A valid driver’s license and a strong safety record are typically required due to vehicle operation and fieldwork.
