Job description
About Tasman Rugby Union
Tasman Rugby Union Incorporated leads and governs rugby activities across Te Tauihu (Nelson, Tasman, and Marlborough) from grassroots levels including clubs and schools to premier teams like the Tasman Mako in the NPC and Farah Palmer Cup. It plays a vital role in connecting and motivating regional communities through rugby.
Role Overview
The TRU Board is inviting qualified governance professionals or senior executives to express interest in joining as Independent Directors. The Board's responsibilities include setting strategic direction, overseeing organizational performance, maintaining financial sustainability and integrity, managing risks with modern governance approaches, and nurturing strong relationships with key stakeholders such as clubs, provincial unions, New Zealand Rugby, commercial partners, and local communities.
Independent Directors provide impartial judgment and strategic perspective without representing any particular club or sub-union, ensuring decisions benefit rugby across Te Tauihu entirely.
Desired Skills and Expertise
- Experience in commercial strategy and revenue diversification including partnership development and sponsorship.
- Knowledge of financial and risk governance such as risk frameworks, compliance, and fiscal management.
- Understanding of high-performance pathways in sports, focusing on athlete development.
- Skills in marketing and digital communications including brand engagement and modern media platforms.
- Expertise in community and stakeholder engagement to promote collaboration across civic and regional networks.
Diversity and Inclusion Commitment
Tasman Rugby Union is dedicated to promoting an inclusive governance culture that mirrors the diversity of Te Tauihu’s communities and rugby's evolving landscape in Aotearoa.
- Encourages applications from wāhine (women) interested in governance roles in sport.
- Welcomes Māori leaders with strong community ties, cultural understanding, and knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles in governance.
Application Procedure
Applications should be submitted confidentially and must include:
- A tailored cover letter outlining governance experience and relevant expertise for the TRU Board.
- A current curriculum vitae (CV).
- Confirmation of Independent Status, verifying no conflicts with club or sub-union affiliations.
Contact Paul Dalzell, Appointments Panel Chair, via email or phone. The application deadline is 5:00 PM, Friday 23 October.
