Operating over 60 purpose-built hospitals, it offers rapid access to premium ophthalmology services, specializing in cataract surgery, treatments for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma management, YAG laser capsulotomy, oculoplastics, and vitreoretinal procedures within both NHS and private frameworks. Continuous professional development is fostered through accredited postoperative programs and CPD, supporting its mission to provide timely, safe, and compassionate eye care that positively impacts lives.

Role Overview

The role is a full-time position based onsite at SpaMedica’s Kendal location, designated for a Hospital Optometrist. Key duties encompass conducting detailed eye examinations, including refraction, biometry, and clinical evaluation to support clinical care pathways for cataract, glaucoma, AMD, among other eye conditions. The optometrist will interpret clinical data, collaborate with ophthalmologists on treatment plans, and assist in pre- and post-operative patient management. Responsibilities also involve clinic workflow management, precise clinical documentation using designated systems, adherence to safety, infection control, and governance standards. Active participation in multidisciplinary team discussions, patient education, counseling, service enhancement, and clinical audits forms an essential part of the role.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Proficient clinical expertise in hospital optometry, including comprehensive examinations, refraction, biometry, with assessments for cataract, glaucoma, AMD, and other prevalent conditions.
  • Strong analytical and diagnostic skills, ability to interpret clinical findings, operate diagnostic tools effectively, and make appropriate referrals within a multidisciplinary framework.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal capabilities to elucidate clinical details clearly, foster patient reassurance, and collaborate with ophthalmologists, nursing staff, and administrative personnel.
  • Efficient organizational and time management skills to handle busy clinics, maintain accurate clinical records, and ensure compliance with safety, infection control, and governance protocols.
  • Registered with the General Optical Council as an Optometrist (or recognized equivalent) and eligible to work in the UK; experience in independent prescribing or hospital optometry advantageous.
  • Dedicated to continual professional growth via CPD and clinical training, embracing a patient-focused ethos consistent with SpaMedica’s commitment to quality outcomes and compassionate care.
