Role Overview
As Head of Development, you will lead a dynamic and fast-moving environment, guiding a team of Technical Leads. Your responsibility includes ensuring we have the optimal talent, team size, and engineering culture to successfully produce strategy games and the supporting platform. You will champion both short-term game development needs and the long-term growth of our engine technologies, fostering technical excellence aligned with our studio’s vision for deep strategy gaming.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with Technical Leads, Director of Game Development, and stakeholders to craft a technical roadmap and prioritize technology initiatives.
- Maintain and promote a development culture that embodies our vision and strategic goals.
- Ensure transparent scheduling of development timelines.
- Manage and optimize resource allocation across concurrent projects.
- Enhance AI-driven workflows to automate repetitive tasks, allowing more capacity for strategy and collaboration.
- Uphold high-quality standards through code reviews, best practices, and mentoring to ensure a maintainable codebase.
- Foster a developer-friendly culture that encourages growth and thriving among engineers.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to align technical capabilities with creative direction and studio strategy.
- Oversee management of third-party relationships with budget approvals.
- Lead recruitment and retention efforts to build a diverse engineering team across game and engine divisions.
- Handle budget planning jointly with VP Technology and Director of Game Development, including training budgets.
- Mentor and cultivate leadership within the technical team.
- Serve as line manager for Technical Leads, supporting career growth, coaching, and performance appraisals.
- Work alongside leadership to evolve engine technology supporting long-range product and portfolio objectives.
- Define and uphold technical standards ensuring game performance across platforms.
- Keep abreast of advancements in development culture, developer experience, and innovative work methods.
- Drive innovation in developer experience and culture, utilizing AI and other cutting-edge tools.
Candidate Profile
- Proven leadership experience managing engineering teams and establishing trust with senior technical personnel in fast-paced settings.
- Strong foundation as a full-stack or backend developer, capable of contributing to architectural decisions and technical trade-offs.
- Experience bridging product and engineering teams, with effective communication in both domains.
- Advanced knowledge of Agile methodologies, adept at balancing process discipline with flexibility.
- A proactive approach to applying Artificial Intelligence beyond basic usage, enhancing workflow automation.
- Passion for gaming and deep appreciation for players invested in long-term play.
- Fluent English required; proficiency in German is advantageous.
- Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience emphasizing deep expertise over formal credentials.
