About the Team and Role
You will join an innovative engineering group responsible for the transformative development of the Runtime platform (RTP), which is core to Walmart Global Tech’s operations and applications. This platform manages critical services like Traffic Management, Container and VM management, Configuration, and Secrets. The Runtime platform powers all Walmart businesses, making it essential to the enterprise. The team comprises highly skilled experts in container orchestration, traffic handling, and cloud platform technologies.
The Traffic Platform’s goal is to provide Walmart with a modern, efficient routing stack enabling multi-cloud deployments. It manages all inbound and outbound traffic, including CDN infrastructure, proxies, load balancers, global DNS, API management, and cutting-edge technologies such as eBPF, supporting 10 million requests per second to ensure business continuity with security and reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead senior engineering leaders and architects to build and operate next-generation Runtime and Traffic platforms globally.
- Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing engineering team focused on platform excellence and innovation.
- Drive continuous improvements in platform performance, reliability, and user experience by proactively resolving customer issues.
- Foster a culture emphasizing platform thinking, engineering excellence, and operational efficiency to support business growth.
- Provide technology leadership and guidance across container, VM, secrets, and configuration management, prioritizing Traffic platform advancements.
- Align with product, business, and operational stakeholders to shape and execute the traffic systems roadmap consistent with business goals.
- Ensure compliance with global network security standards, including DDoS protection and rate limiting policies.
- Lead strategies involving edge computing and CDN to optimize traffic routing and reduce latency.
- Implement best practices in traffic management such as queuing, rate limiting, segmentation, and circuit breakers to enhance customer experience and safety.
- Optimize platform cost, efficiency, availability, performance, and resilience continuously.
- Translate C-level strategic objectives into measurable technology roadmaps and initiatives, tracking success with data-driven metrics.
Qualifications and Experience
- Over 20 years of industry experience with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related fields.
- Minimum 10 years managing large scale cloud platforms involving container orchestration, VM management, secrets/configuration services, and network traffic management.
- Solid expertise in Kubernetes and VM ecosystems, distributed networking, edge computing, and cloud-native traffic optimization.
- Practical knowledge of cloud networking on Azure, AWS, or GCP, including Kubernetes networking and service mesh technologies like Istio, Envoy, and Linkerd.
- Strong understanding of TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS protocols, traffic policies, and security practices such as rate limiting and DDoS mitigation.
- Demonstrated success in operational excellence, including achieving fast service recovery through observability and automation.
- Experienced communicator skilled in motivating teams and engaging senior leaders with technical vision and business alignment.
- Familiarity with developing or contributing to open-source traffic and networking products is an advantage.
- Proven leadership ability to build consensus across cross-functional teams and successfully hire and mentor top engineering talent.
- Preferred: Knowledge of digital accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2 AA) and building inclusive products.
