Key Responsibilities

• Perform professional grooming tasks such as bathing, drying, brushing, haircuts, styling, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and gland cleaning following owners' instructions, breed standards, and company policies.
• Operate and maintain grooming tools including clippers, blades, shears, brushes, and dryers.
• Ensure pet safety and comfort by monitoring health and behavior, reporting any concerns to owners and management promptly.
• Assess each pet's individual needs considering coat, skin condition, and temperament.
• Engage courteously with pet owners by providing top-notch customer service, answering grooming questions, giving recommendations, and resolving issues.
• Educate pet parents on proper grooming upkeep and home care products to promote pet health.
• Maintain cleanliness and safety of the grooming area by sanitizing equipment and completing routine cleaning tasks per hygiene standards.
• Adhere to Petco’s grooming standards, ensuring consistent quality and salon safety.
• Provide training and supervision to junior trainees when leadership is unavailable.

Qualifications and Experience

• Completion of Petco’s Pet Stylist Apprentice program or prior professional grooming experience or relevant training.
• High school diploma or GED preferred but not mandatory.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment to troubleshoot grooming-related situations with occasional managerial guidance.
• Detail-oriented with commitment to high-quality grooming outputs and productivity.
• A deep passion for animals and aspirations to progress in a pet grooming career.
• Strong understanding of dog breeds, grooming needs, health issues, and behaviors.
• Proficiency in breed-specific grooming techniques and styling standards.
• Effective communication skills for interaction with pet owners and colleagues.
• Comfortable handling pets of various sizes and temperaments with empathy.
• Flexible availability, including weekends, holidays, and evening shifts as per salon schedule.

Work Environment

The role is mainly indoors at the grooming salon. Physical demands include bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, standing for long durations, and occasional use of support tools. The atmosphere may involve noise and moisture. Interaction with pets and salon teammates forms a majority of the work experience.

Compensation and Benefits

Hourly pay ranges from $15.00 to $23.00, with actual wages depending on experience, location, and applicable laws.
