About the Role
Newmont Corporation, with a century-long legacy in responsible mining, seeks a Geological Technician to join the team at its Ahafo South mine in Ghana. The role supports mine geologists with the management of drilled core samples from underground activities to ensure timely delivery to the assay laboratory. This position operates onsite and involves rotating responsibilities between core shed and underground duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, check, and manage drill core delivery from underground to the core shed daily, ensuring accuracy of hole identifications, labels, and depth indicators.
- Prepare cores for logging by marking meter points and identifying zones of core loss; prepare sample tags following geologist's logs for subsequent sampling.
- Conduct core sampling per geologist instructions, correctly bag and label samples, and include quality assurance/quality control (QAQC) materials for analysis.
- Ensure core photographs are properly captured, correctly named according to naming conventions, and securely stored on the digital server.
- Maintain adequate inventory of core processing consumables and request timely replenishments.
- Coordinate with Assay Lab Technicians for the transport and storage of pulp samples.
- Collaborate with Drilling Geologists to review and update core processing protocols and procedures.
- Enter daily drilling progress data into spreadsheets and perform other geologist-assigned duties.
- Underground, prepare areas for mapping by washing and scaling (if necessary), then perform scan/photo mapping.
- Collect sub-level shrinkage grab samples underground according to standard operating procedures, add QAQC materials, and ensure timely dispatch to the lab.
- Conduct stockpile and heading inspections and assist with other geological assignments underground.
- Participate actively in promoting safety and environmental awareness, identifying hazards, adhering to safety standards, and engaging in regular safety discussions.
Qualifications and Experience
- At minimum, possession of a Senior High School Certificate.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience managing core sheds and core processing; experience in underground mining is preferred.
- At least 5 years’ proven driving experience within a mining environment.

Work Environment and Conditions
- The role is based at Newmont’s Ahafo South (SUG) mine, combining office and underground mine settings.
- Conditions include moist and wet surfaces, exposure to falling water, dust, high heat and humidity, and loud noises necessitating hearing protection.
- Working underground involves navigating steep declines, uneven terrain, dark environments requiring headlamp use, and handling corrosive chemicals.
