Role Overview
We are looking for a skilled General Counsel to join Cowell Clarke. Reporting to the CEO, this role involves close collaboration with the CEO, Chair, Board, Directors, and leadership team, offering legally sound advice on strategic and operational issues that influence the firm.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing guidance on corporate governance, legal risk management, and regulatory compliance.
- Managing and enhancing the firm's Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) compliance program.
- Supporting initiatives related to technology, artificial intelligence, and intellectual property.
- Reviewing and negotiating a variety of commercial contracts.
- Offering legal support concerning employment and human resources matters.
- Developing and maintaining internal precedents, policies, and legal guidance documents.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a commercially oriented lawyer who enjoys addressing diverse legal challenges and working in partnership with senior stakeholders to provide practical, solution-driven advice.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Between 4 to 8 years post-admission legal experience, with an emphasis on capability and judgment over years.
- Strong background in corporate and commercial law, including governance, regulatory compliance, or in-house advisory experience.
- Proven expertise in reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts.
- Ability to assess legal risks effectively, provide pragmatic counsel, and recognize when to consult external specialized legal professionals.
- Excellent judgment, discretion, and the ability to manage relationships with senior leaders confidently.
- Keen interest in technology, AI, intellectual property, and emerging regulatory challenges.
- A collaborative, proactive attitude with commercial focus.
