About the Role and Organisation

The Games Examiner position at the Games Rating Authority (GRA) is a full-time role based onsite in Stevenage, England, with standard working hours from 9:00 to 17:00. The GRA, established in 1989 and formerly known as the Video Standards Council, is the UK's official regulator responsible for administering the PEGI video game age rating scheme. The organisation helps parents, players, and industry professionals understand video game content and age suitability through rigorous classification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and assess video games and apps submitted for age rating compliance using PEGI standards.
  • Document relevant content thoroughly and produce clear, concise reports on game examinations.
  • Consistently apply PEGI age rating criteria, ensuring accurate classification and consumer information.
  • Engage professionally with game publishers and industry stakeholders for clarification and discussion about ratings.
  • Handle game examination-related administration and maintain confidential records securely.
  • Stay informed about industry developments, PEGI updates, and video game trends.
  • Assist with general office tasks linked to the PEGI system and broader administrative duties as needed.

Required Skills and Attributes

  • Excellent analytical skills and keen attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities to clearly present findings and relevant information.
  • Objective application of rules and criteria, minimizing personal biases.
  • Effective organisational and time management capabilities.
  • Comfort with working autonomously while collaborating within a small team.
  • Proactive problem-solving aptitude and good judgement.
  • Competence with IT tools, including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Advanced gaming skills with exposure to diverse genres, platforms, and play styles.
  • Familiarity with gaming industry terminology, PEGI classifications, and online safety concepts.
  • Professional handling of sensitive, confidential, or potentially challenging game content.

Desirable Experience

Experience in fields such as game classification, content moderation, game development or publishing, online safety, regulation, or similar is advantageous but not mandatory.

Application Process

Applicants must complete multiple assessment steps to be considered:

  • Gameplay Review: Choose a video game, analyse 30 minutes of gameplay footage, and submit a link to the video.
  • Written Assessment: Provide a content log with timestamps, state a proposed PEGI age rating with justification, outline the game's premise and gameplay, discuss content relevant to the rating, and mention additional issues pertinent to parents and players.
  • Cover Letter: Detail motivation for applying, relevant experience, gaming background, knowledge of the industry and regulation, and other pertinent qualifications or skills.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an in-person interview at the GRA's Stevenage office, including a formal discussion and a practical examination exercise simulating job duties under realistic conditions.

The Games Rating Authority promotes a respectful and inclusive workplace culture and welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds to ensure fairness throughout recruitment.
