About Compass Education and the Clipboard Team
Join Compass Education in revolutionizing how schools handle their daily functions, from financial management and payments to communications and event coordination. Clipboard, an integral part of the Compass ecosystem, is designed to streamline extracurricular program management, covering registrations, attendance, communications, and payments for activities like sports and clubs outside of the classroom.
We blend the fast-paced, ownership-driven dynamics of a product engineering team with the scale of a global ed-tech ecosystem supporting thousands of schools worldwide.
Role Overview
As a Junior to Mid-level Software Engineer on the Clipboard team, you will participate in a cross-functional group responsible for building and evolving the product. This position is a mix of practical coding work alongside strategic decision-making regarding problem solving, shipping priorities, and architecture development.
Responsibilities
- Manage defined development tasks from initial ticket creation through production deployment, collaborating closely with product managers and team members.
- Write clean, well-tested code and participate actively in code reviews, promoting quality and craftsmanship.
- Utilize feature flags and staged rollouts to deploy incrementally, providing early customer value and minimizing risk with major changes.
- Maintain documentation of key technical decisions through lightweight Decision Logs.
- Engage with AI development tools including prompt design, skill integration, agent harness usage, and handling context files within repositories.
- Coordinate with support teams to diagnose and fix issues in production environments.
Candidate Profile and Requirements
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related disciplines, or equivalent practical experience.
- Practical experience with AI-powered coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor, with awareness of their strengths and limitations.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Solid understanding of computer science fundamentals and enthusiasm for the entire software development lifecycle including development, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
- Familiarity with or ability to quickly adapt to the technology stack: Node.js, TypeScript, Angular, PostgreSQL, AWS services (Lambda, ECS Fargate), Nx monorepo, Buildkite, Jest, Storybook, and Playwright.
- Curious about the product and business context beyond just coding tasks.
- Attention to quality that involves identifying and preventing poor abstractions, redundant logic, subtle bugs, and issues where code passes tests but fails actual use cases.
- Strong analytical mindset with a tendency to investigate problems deeply before implementing solutions.
- Valid Employee Working With Children Check, National Police Check, and proof of unrestricted Australian work rights are required before starting.
Benefits and Culture
- Collaborative culture focused on collectively shaping the future of education with passionate and adaptable colleagues.
- Hybrid working schedule with access to the North Sydney office throughout the week.
- Opportunities for learning, professional development, and a dedicated personal development budget.
- 24/7 Employee Assistance Program offering face-to-face, live chat, and phone support.
- Parental Leave Program available for primary and secondary caregivers.
- An inclusive and supportive working environment where every voice is valued and heard.
- As a growing company, Compass offers ambitious professionals a platform to develop and advance their careers alongside us.
