Job description

About Open

Open is revolutionizing the insurance industry using AI, aiming to simplify and reduce the cost of insurance globally. Since its inception in 2016, Open has expanded across Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, operating as a certified B Corporation. The company builds innovative infrastructure to transform insurance into a transparent and user-friendly experience.

Role Overview

This position is part of Open's UK engineering expansion, focusing on Open Embedded—the flagship product that integrates insurance offerings directly into partner customer journeys like car, home, travel, landlord, and purchase-protection insurance. The UK team handles partner-specific requirements, integration, configuration, and platform maintenance in the region, collaborating closely with the Australian engineering team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deploy UK partner integrations from requirements gathering through to live deployment.
  • Engage deeply with partner needs to distinguish between configurable platform features and necessary custom development.
  • Convert technical requirements into functional software solutions with clear documentation on platform gaps.
  • Participate actively in technical discussions with partner engineers and manage resulting tasks.
  • Maintain transparency on progress and manage deliverables with no unexpected delays.
  • Continuously reduce turnaround time from partner agreement to live journey implementation using modern software development techniques.
  • Leverage AI agents to enhance workflow efficiency, including design, coding, testing, and diagnostics.
  • Implement human-in-the-loop AI safety patterns ensuring regulatory compliance and operational safety in decisions impacting coverage or claims.
  • Contribute to keeping the UK platform available, reliable, and secure, collaborating with TechOps, Solution Architecture, and InfoSec teams.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, troubleshoot production issues, and document incident responses accurately.
  • Make informed design decisions and escalate as needed while ensuring code quality, test coverage, and documentation are maintained.
  • Feed insights and learnings back into platform improvements from partner and incident experiences.

Candidate Profile

This is a hands-on, broad engineering role that requires ownership and adaptability within a lean, high-trust setting. Candidates should be comfortable navigating ambiguous requirements, extending an existing complex platform across various technology layers, and actively collaborating with partners.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum 3 years experience in building and maintaining production-grade software used by real users.
  • Proficient full-stack development skills with strong expertise in either frontend or backend but competent in both.
  • Experience working with complex, pre-existing codebases, safely extending and maintaining them.
  • Practical knowledge of building integrations with external APIs, including managing contracts, retries, and idempotency.
  • Strong Python programming experience and familiarity with modern AWS services for deploying and maintaining applications.
  • Proficiency in modern frontend development using TypeScript and component-based frameworks, with attention to user experience.
  • Daily usage of AI agents to augment personal workflow and improve delivery efficiency.
  • Proven ownership of software throughout the build, release, and support stages.
  • Experience with modern CI/CD practices emphasizing small, frequent, and reversible deployments.
  • Strong communication skills that ensure clarity in documentation, design notes, and incident reports for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Good judgment in scoping work to deliver valuable increments promptly while identifying larger issues for future considering.
  • Proactive attitude with a focus on early issue detection, root cause resolution, and continual process improvement.

Preferred Attributes

  • Background in insurance, fintech, or regulated financial services sectors.
  • Experience in partner-facing or integration engineering roles working closely with core product teams.
  • Familiarity with configurable or no-code platform solutions, such as embedded insurance or white-label sales flows.
  • Exposure to building or supporting AI/ML systems or agentic production software.
  • Knowledge of cloud-native data warehousing solutions like Snowflake and AI data layering.
  • Experience working remotely with distributed teams across time zones.
  • Understanding of AI safety methods such as evaluations, red-teaming, guardrails, and human-in-the-loop approaches.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.

Work Location and Conditions

The role is London-based with a hybrid working model: three days in-office and two flexible remote days weekly to support collaboration and maintain a fast-paced, trust-driven culture. Close coordination with the Australian team includes thorough written communication and occasional early calls without requiring time zone shifts.

Additional Information

  • Applicants must have the right to work in the United Kingdom.
  • Open offers competitive remuneration including share options, high autonomy, internal growth opportunities, flexible working hours, paid parental leave, and a personal development allowance for well-being and learning.
  • The company values diversity and encourages applicants who may not meet every criterion to apply.
