Having recently completed a Series B funding round led by Kinnevik, Nory has expanded to over 100 employees across Ireland, the UK, Spain, and New York. Demand for the product is growing rapidly.

Role Overview

We are seeking the inaugural dedicated Staff Mobile Engineer to join our Platform team. This is an impactful builder role responsible for shaping and developing the Nory mobile app from scratch. The role demands independence in making and advocating for UX decisions due to minimal design support.

The Nory Team mobile application serves restaurant floor staff for actions like clocking in, shift management, leave booking, and payroll access. Our objective is a complete rebuild from the ground up to deliver the most reliable and user-friendly experience. The app must function reliably in challenging environments—such as basements with weak signals and on low-spec, possibly damaged devices—to ensure users never miss a shift or paycheck.

Technologies primarily include React Native (over Capacitor and React), with backend services built in Python and FastAPI; the broader stack incorporates TypeScript, Node.js, AWS (Fargate, Aurora, SQS), Postgres, MongoDB, and Docker.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the current mobile app and lead the architectural design and full rebuild of the platform.
• Deliver a minimum viable product within one to two quarters, followed by platform development supporting broader engineering contributions.
• Build for real-world constraints including patchy internet connectivity and low-spec devices (supporting iOS 16+ and Android 12+ with as little as 2GB RAM), employing offline caching strategies.
• Develop native functionalities like push notifications, camera scanning for receipts and inventory, and GPS-verified clock-in, ensuring reliability despite flaky GPS and connectivity.
• Make independent, informed product and user experience decisions, balancing scope within deadlines where design resources are limited.
• Establish a modular React Native design system compatible with AI-assisted code generation to accelerate development without sacrificing UX quality.
• Maintain the mobile platform codebase’s quality and performance, providing a robust foundation for other engineers.
• Collaborate closely with product, design, and engineering teams company-wide while serving as the principal mobile platform contact.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Advanced proficiency in React Native with extensive experience shipping production-grade apps in TypeScript.
• Strong hands-on involvement in native mobile features such as push notifications, camera access, and geolocation.
• Ability to understand and modify backend FastAPI services related to mobile features, with occasional contributions to React web code when needed.
• Experience building scalable and reliable apps managing large user interactions daily, optimizing API calls and performance.
• Demonstrated passion and influence over product and UX decisions, able to independently prioritize and protect design quality.
• Experience leveraging AI in the development process while upholding high coding standards, including establishing design systems or shared component libraries.
• Proven track record leading full mobile app builds or major migrations with ownership over architectural, testing, and migration strategies.
• Excellent communication skills, comfortable engaging with engineering teams and acting as a visible leader of the mobile platform.

Preferred (Bonus) Experience

• Background in building HR or people technology platforms at scale.
• Experience working on integrated web and mobile platform teams, with strong architectural and best practice disciplines.
• History with consumer-grade B2C apps emphasizing speed, responsiveness, and user experience.
• Some familiarity with native mobile APIs such as Swift or Kotlin.
• Previous exposure to hospitality, food service, or related operational sectors.
