Forward Deployed Engineering Manager, GenAI (Mandarin, English)

About the Role

Google is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineering Manager to lead a team of AI/ML engineers focused on bridging advanced AI products with practical deployment in customer settings. The role involves hands-on leadership where the team not only advises but also codes, debugs, and implements custom AI-driven solutions on site. You will mentor engineers and align strategic initiatives with Product, Engineering, and Sales leadership to overcome production challenges such as data readiness, integration, and state-management for enterprise AI solutions.

Responsibilities

• Lead and set high standards for code and system architecture to achieve engineering excellence.
• Collaborate with business and technical leaders to define requirements and deploy subject experts to key accounts.
• Drive technical hiring for the FDE team, evaluating expertise in AI/ML, systems engineering, and programming.
• Address skill gaps in emerging AI technologies to sustain team expertise.
• Partner with product and engineering teams to unblock issues, share field insights, and develop internal tools enhancing efficiency.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics or equivalent practical experience.
• At least 8 years' experience in cloud computing or technical customer-facing roles.
• Minimum 2 years managing software engineering or forward deployed engineering teams in cloud environments.
• Proven experience developing AI/GenAI solutions, including AI tools, multi-agent workflows, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation systems.
• Track record in leading AI implementations from concept to deployment with China-go-Global clients.
• Fluency in Mandarin and English to engage effectively with Chinese global customers.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in AI, Computer Science, or related fields.
• Experience crafting user-friendly interfaces for complex AI and agentic systems emphasizing transparency and explainability.
• Skill in architecting AI solutions that comply with data sovereignty and secure governance requirements.
• Capability to conduct deep discovery interviews to identify business problems and communicate technical constraints to executives and teams.
• Expertise in designing secure and observable multi-agent AI systems using advanced design patterns, state management, and protocols.
