Job description
About Cohere and the Role
Cohere is a leading enterprise AI company focused on building advanced, security-focused foundational AI models and comprehensive products that address practical business challenges. Operating globally with headquarters in Toronto and offices in major cities including Berlin, our team comprises researchers, engineers, and designers dedicated to advancing AI capabilities and delivering tangible customer value.
The Forward Deployed Engineer for the Agentic Platform will play a crucial role bridging our core product, North, an AI workspace platform, and enterprise clients. This platform enables secure and customizable AI deployment, seamlessly integrating AI agents with workplace tools while securing sensitive data. This position offers a unique chance to influence how businesses implement AI, particularly in sectors like finance, healthcare, and telecommunications, by developing reliable, safe, and auditable AI agents.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate closely with enterprise customers to convert complex, high-impact business challenges into well-structured agentic workflows, defining success criteria and evaluation methods.
- Lead the architecture, development, and deployment of LLM-driven agents capable of planning and acting across tools, APIs, and sensitive data sources with enterprise-grade standards for reliability and performance.
- Design, implement, and release North platform features throughout the entire product lifecycle from ideation to production.
- Own use case scoping and solution design end-to-end, adapting across technical domains—including frontend development as needed—to deliver optimal outcomes.
- Contribute to shared development frameworks and patterns to ensure consistent and high-quality deliverables across teams and customers.
- Clarify ambiguous situations, foster team alignment, and help elevate engineering standards across the company.
- Travel 20–40% of the time to collaborate onsite with customers and partners.
Candidate Profile
- Proven experience in developing and deploying production software using Python that is clean, testable, observable, and scalable.
- Experience building and deploying high-performance retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and agentic applications, including agents that execute multi-step tasks using frameworks like ReAct or Plan-and-Execute.
- Deep expertise with LLM technology stacks, including frontier AI models, vector databases, and orchestration frameworks.
- Strong background in creating robust evaluation mechanisms measuring agent precision, safety, and responsiveness beyond trial-and-error approaches.
- Proficiency in engaging directly with enterprise customers, leading technical discussions and translating ambiguous business requirements into precise technical specifications.
- Demonstrated ownership of use cases from conception through delivery.
- Ability to perform effectively in dynamic, fast-changing environments with shifting priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience setting architectural guidelines for AI and agentic systems across distributed teams.
- Willingness and ability to work outside primary technical domains, such as frontend development if the problem requires.
- Familiarity with regulated industries like finance, healthcare, or telecommunications.
- Understanding of enterprise security, compliance, and auditability requirements related to AI systems.
Benefits and Work Culture
- Weekly meal stipend of $75/£75 or currency equivalent for lunch.
- Comprehensive health and dental insurance, plus dedicated funding for mental health support.
- Retirement benefits including RRSP matching, 401K, or pension schemes.
- Full parental leave top-up for up to six months for either parent.
- Annual enrichment budgets covering arts, culture, fitness, wellness, workspace improvements, and education for conferences, courses, and coaching.
- Six weeks (30 working days) of paid vacation annually.
- Travel budgets for visiting other offices and participation in an annual company-wide offsite event.
Work Environment
- Cohere supports remote-friendly work with multiple global offices.
- Office employees enjoy daily lunches, snacks, and community events; remote workers receive coworking benefits in their city.
- All employees receive a $500 stipend to equip their home office.
