Cohere is a pioneering enterprise AI company committed to security, creating state-of-the-art foundational AI models and comprehensive products tailored to tackle practical business challenges. Our team, comprising researchers, engineers, and designers worldwide, is passionate about advancing AI capabilities and integrating them into real-world applications.

Headquartered in Toronto, with offices globally, Cohere is building the future of AI adoption by delivering robust, scalable solutions for enterprises.

About the North Platform

North is Cohere's innovative AI workspace, engineered to transform enterprise AI usage. It offers a safe, adaptable environment that allows organizations to deploy AI while safeguarding sensitive information. North connects AI-driven agents smoothly with company workflows, tools, and applications.

Role Overview

This position presents an exciting chance to influence how enterprises apply AI in practical settings. Serving as a key liaison between North's core platform and client engineering teams, you will tackle sophisticated problems and securely embed AI across critical industries such as finance, healthcare, and telecommunications.

As a Software Engineer skilled in Applied AI, you will be responsible for designing, building, and launching agentic workflows powered by Large Language Models (LLMs), spanning from initial prototypes to production-ready AI agents that create measurable business impact. Collaboration with clients on unique workflows integrating LLMs with tools, APIs, and data sources is central to this role, maintaining high standards of reliability, observability, safety, and auditability from the outset.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with enterprise clients to convert complex and ambiguous business challenges into clearly defined agentic workflows with measurable success benchmarks.
  • Lead end-to-end creation and deployment of AI agents powered by LLMs capable of reasoning, planning, and operating across various tools, APIs, and secure enterprise data.
  • Develop and deploy features for North’s AI workspace platform, managing the product lifecycle from ideation to live production.
  • Manage the comprehensive scope of use cases, adapting flexibly across technical areas, including frontend development when necessary, to deliver optimal solutions.
  • Contribute to the development of standardized frameworks and patterns that support consistent, high-quality delivery across teams and customers.
  • Clarify ambiguous scenarios, promote alignment among stakeholders, and uphold superior engineering standards organization-wide.
  • Undertake travel commitments ranging from 20–40% to work onsite with customers and partners.

Candidate Profile

  • Proven experience in developing and deploying robust, production-grade software in Python, with an emphasis on clean, testable, scalable, and observable code.
  • Demonstrated ability to build high-performance Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and agentic applications, including multi-step task execution agents using methodologies such as ReAct or Plan-and-Execute.
  • In-depth understanding of the LLM technology stack, including advanced models, vector databases, and orchestration frameworks.
  • Experienced in constructing comprehensive evaluation frameworks that assess agent accuracy, safety, and performance beyond simple trial and error.
  • Skilled in liaising with enterprise stakeholders, guiding technical discussions, and converting vague business requirements into detailed technical specifications.
  • Experience managing complete use case lifecycles independently.
  • Comfortable thriving in fast-paced, dynamic environments where priorities may evolve rapidly.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience defining architectural standards for AI and agentic systems across distributed teams.
  • Willingness and capability to work in unfamiliar technical domains, including frontend development when required.
  • Background working within regulated or sensitive sectors such as finance, healthcare, or telecommunications.
  • Familiarity with enterprise security, compliance, and audit requirements relevant to AI systems.

Employee Benefits

  • Weekly lunch stipend of $75 or local equivalent.
  • Comprehensive health and dental insurance plans, including dedicated mental health budgets.
  • Retirement savings plans such as RRSP matching, 401K, or pension schemes.
  • 100% paid parental leave top-up for up to six months for either parent.
  • Annual enrichment allowances covering arts and culture, fitness and wellness, personal time, workspace improvements, and education with stipends for conferences, courses, and coaching.
  • Generous paid vacation totaling six weeks (30 working days).
  • Travel budget for visiting other offices and participation in annual company offsite events.

Working Environment

  • Remote-friendly company with multiple global offices including Toronto, London, New York, San Francisco, Montreal, Paris, Berlin, and Seoul, among others.
  • Onsite employees benefit from daily catered lunches, ample snacks, and regular social activities.
  • Remote employees have access to coworking subsidies to connect with local peers.
  • All employees receive a $500 stipend to optimize their home office setup.
