This role is vital in preparing complete print jobs prior to press operation, involving ink mixing, plate mounting, and assembly of cylinders, dies, tooling, and colour standards to ensure smooth production runs. The technician is also responsible for cleaning and organizing equipment post-production to facilitate efficient subsequent jobs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review job tickets and production specs carefully before starting setups.
  • Mix, adjust, and match UV and water-based flexographic inks to customer colour standards using tools like spectrophotometers and densitometers.
  • Prepare complete job carts with matched inks, mounted plates, cylinders, dies, anilox rolls, tooling, and approved colour samples.
  • Mount printing plates accurately with appropriate tapes and verify positioning, orientation, and registration per production requirements.
  • Inspect all materials and tools for cleanliness and defects before releasing them to the pressroom.
  • Coordinate with press operators and production for accurate and efficient job changeovers.
  • After production, receive and account for all setup assets, clean and store inks and tooling properly, maintaining traceability and inventory records.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and audit-ready ink kitchen, plate-mounting area, and tooling storage in compliance with safety and food-packaging standards.

Qualifications & Experience

  • At least 1 year of practical experience in flexographic printing, ink preparation, plate mounting, or pressroom support; 3+ years in narrow-web label production preferred.
  • Proficiency with UV and water-based inks, Pantone colour matching, and colour measurement devices (spectrophotometer, densitometer).
  • Experience with plate-mounting systems and flexographic press setups advantageous.
  • Comfortable managing formulas, production data, and inventory records using computers.
  • Strong skills in basic math, measurements, proofreading, and interpreting job tickets.
  • Physical ability to handle up to 50 lbs, stand extended shifts, and safely manipulate press components and materials.

Work Environment & Safety

  • Knowledge of WHMIS, chemical handling, PPE use, spill control, and safe storage procedures is required.
  • Must comply with safety protocols for handling inks, coatings, adhesives, cleaners, and other pressroom chemicals.
  • Work in an SQF-certified food packaging plant, requiring wearing provided hairnets and PPE including safety footwear.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workplace supporting safety, quality, and food packaging compliance.

What Matters Most

  • Reliability and punctuality to start shifts ready to work.
  • Meticulous attention to detail in color consistency, traceability, and job-ticket accuracy.
  • Strong organizational skills to juggle multiple jobs and priorities without losing track of materials.
  • Ability to work autonomously while communicating effectively with production teammates.
  • Practical problem-solving skills, a positive mindset, and eagerness to improve work processes.

Schedule, Compensation & Benefits

  • Full-time day shifts Monday to Friday (five 8-hour days) with possibility of Monday to Thursday (four 10-hour days) based on needs.
  • Overtime may occasionally be necessary.
  • Hourly wage ranges from $24.00 to $29.90 depending on relevant experience.
  • Employee co-pay optional extended health and dental benefits available.
