Financial Director

Overview

The Financial Director will lead and oversee the organization's financial activities focused on civil engineering and construction operations. This role requires managing financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, project financial controls, contracts, cash flow, reporting, risk management, and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage all financial operations and provide strategic financial leadership for civil and construction projects.
• Direct financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and implementation of financial strategies.
• Track and communicate financial performance, project profitability, cash flow, and overall financial status to senior leadership and the Board.
• Develop financial forecasts and long-term projections for projects.
• Supervise accounting and cost control for construction projects, including financial reporting.
• Oversee budgets, actual expenditures, commitments, variations, claims, retentions, accruals, and project profit margins.
• Ensure timely billing, invoicing, collections, and management of receivables for contracts.
• Monitor cash flow and working capital to support ongoing construction activities.
• Collaborate closely with Commercial, Contracts, Quantity Surveying, Procurement, and Project teams on financial matters.
• Review financial terms related to construction contracts, subcontractors, changes, claims, and commitments.
• Lead the annual budgeting and performance monitoring processes.
• Identify and mitigate financial, commercial, and project-related risks.
• Ensure compliance with accounting standards, financial regulations, organizational policies, and internal controls.
• Coordinate internal and external audits and address audit findings promptly.
• Implement and maintain financial control procedures for company and project assets.
• Continuously enhance accounting, reporting, billing, collection, and overall financial control systems.
• Lead and develop the finance and accounting team for optimal performance.
• Deliver financial insights and recommendations supporting senior management decisions and construction project success.
• Maximize efficiency and accuracy of ERP and financial management systems, ideally SAP.

Required Knowledge and Skills

• Comprehensive understanding of finance and accounting principles within civil and construction industries.
• Expertise in construction project accounting and cost control methodologies.
• Familiarity with construction contracts, billing processes, handling variations, claims management, retention, and cash flow monitoring.
• Strong skills in budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and performance reporting.
• In-depth knowledge of risk management and internal financial control procedures.
• Experience with full accounting cycle and audit processes.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
• Advanced proficiency in MS Excel and Microsoft Office suite.
• Experience with SAP or comparable ERP financial systems is essential or highly desirable.

Experience Requirements

• A minimum of 15 years in finance and accounting roles.
• Demonstrable leadership experience in financial management in the Civil Engineering, Construction, Contracting, or Infrastructure sectors.
• Track record of senior finance management within construction or civil engineering environments.
• Expertise in project finance, cost control, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, billing, and collections.
• Collaborative experience working with Project Management, Commercial, Contracts, Quantity Surveying, Procurement, and senior leaders.

Educational Qualifications

• Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, Public Administration or a related discipline.
• Professional accounting certification such as CPA, ACCA, CMA, ACA, CIMA or equivalent is preferred.
