Financial Controller

About the Role

MPG Recruitment is collaborating with a well-established Irish construction and civil engineering company known for successfully delivering large-scale projects throughout Ireland. The firm operates across various sectors such as construction, civil engineering, groundworks, road building, resurfacing, and related services.

We are seeking an experienced Financial Controller to oversee the financial management of the company and play a pivotal role as the business expands. This position is ideal for a finance professional familiar with the construction industry, who thrives in a dynamic, commercially driven setting.

Key Responsibilities

• Take full ownership of daily finance operations.
• Lead and develop the finance department team.
• Produce precise monthly management accounts and financial reports.
• Manage budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow.
• Track project expenditures, profit margins, and overall profitability.
• Supervise accounts payable, receivable, and credit control activities.
• Handle subcontractor payment procedures and construction-financial processes.
• Ensure adherence to VAT, Relevant Contracts Tax (RCT), and other Irish tax regulations.
• Oversee month-end and year-end closing activities.
• Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, financial institutions, vendors, and clients.
• Establish and maintain robust internal financial controls and procedures.
• Deliver financial insights and commercial analysis to senior leadership.
• Identify areas for system improvements and process efficiencies.
• Support ongoing business growth initiatives.
• Collaborate closely with operational and commercial teams to maintain strong financial oversight across projects.

Candidate Profile

• Holds a professional accountancy qualification such as ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or CPA.
• Possesses substantial post-qualification experience.
• Experienced in construction, civil engineering, contracting, or a similar sector.
• Proficient with management accounts, financial controls, and reporting methodologies.
• Skilled in project accounting, job costing, and monitoring profitability of projects.
• In-depth knowledge of Irish VAT, RCT, and construction-specific financial compliance.
• Experienced in managing and mentoring finance teams.
• Commercially savvy with a capacity to work closely with senior management.
• Strong command of Excel and financial management software.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Effective communication abilities and a pragmatic, hands-on approach in a fast-moving work environment.
