Job description
Company Overview
Our client is a respected fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) business in New Zealand, known for its established and cherished brand portfolio. The company operates with a small, tightly-knit team and collaborates closely with a partnered related company, providing this role with a scope that extends beyond the usual Financial Controller responsibilities.
Role Overview
Reporting directly to the General Manager, the successful candidate will oversee the finance operations across two interconnected FMCG businesses. This hands-on role acts as the second-in-command within the finance function, offering a promising career path that includes budget creation responsibilities and opportunities for board-level engagement for the right candidate willing to enhance existing systems.
Key Duties
- Compile monthly management accounts and prepare Board reporting packages.
- Oversee cash flow forecasting and manage working capital across stock inventory, receivables, and payables.
- Lead the yearly budget planning process alongside ongoing monthly forecast updates.
- Collaborate with the GM and senior leadership on profit margins, pricing strategies, and return on investment from promotions.
- Take responsibility for accurate inventory valuation, cost calculations, and stock reconciliation efforts.
- Ensure adherence to financial controls, compliance with GST and Fringe Benefit Tax regulations, and perform regular balance sheet reconciliations.
- Champion improvements in processes and ERP systems, with potential adoption of AI technology to boost efficiency.
- Manage and mentor accounts payable/accounts receivable teams.
Required Skills and Experience
- Candidates must be Chartered Accountants (CA) or Certified Practising Accountants (CPA) with at least five years’ experience in financial management roles.
- Experience in the FMCG sector is crucial, particularly a thorough understanding of trading terms and rebate arrangements.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and advanced financial modelling skills are expected.
- Experience working with ERP systems, including their enhancement and rollout, is required.
- Ability to communicate complex financial data to non-finance colleagues confidently.
- Agility to work hands-on in a dynamic, small team environment.
- Openness to change and resilience, especially with interest in implementing AI-driven efficiency measures.
- Solution-oriented mindset with pragmatic problem-solving capabilities, and the ability to provide constructive challenges when needed.
Benefits and Opportunities
This position offers significant responsibility and growth potential, including involvement with budgeting and board-level matters. The role provides the chance to work closely with a General Manager who values ownership of detailed financial tasks and supports independent judgment, all within a closely bonded team where one's contributions can be rapidly seen and appreciated.
