Job Overview

This full-time position requires 37.5 hours per week covering a rotating shift schedule including mornings, late shifts, weekends, bank holidays, and occasional day shifts. The Facilities Support Worker plays a vital role within the Portering and Transport team, contributing to a versatile, customer-focused service across the Trust. The role involves a variety of duties such as portering, delivery and collection of meals, pharmacy items, mail, laundry, refuse, and performing basic maintenance tasks. The individual must be proactive, able to prioritize assignments, work independently and maintain professionalism at all times.

Primary Responsibilities

• Perform general portering tasks including transport of mail, meals, pharmacy supplies, and specimens efficiently across Trust sites.
• Collect and deliver equipment, stores, food, linen, and rubbish to wards, villas, and community locations.
• Assist in securing buildings, maintaining key security protocols, performing regular safety checks, and liaising with security teams.
• Operate hospital and plant vehicles according to traffic regulations; driving license required.
• Undertake basic maintenance and repairs including monitoring fire alarms, temperature checks (legionella), vehicle maintenance, clearing gullies, grounds upkeep, installation of fixtures, plumbing repairs, resetting boilers, and gritting pavements during severe weather.
• Maintain cleanliness and safety of the Trust premises and grounds, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
• Support emergency responses, report incidents promptly, and adhere to Trust policies including equal opportunity and safeguarding vulnerable groups.
• Work collaboratively with ward managers and be sensitive to patient needs during duties.
• Participate in ongoing training and development as required to maintain competencies.
• Flexibly respond to changing service needs including overtime and shifts at different Trust properties.

Person Specification

• Essential training in Manual Handling and Fire Safety; willingness to undertake additional relevant training such as Infection Control, COSHH, De-escalation and First Aid is desirable.
• Must hold a valid driving license and have access to a car during working hours (reasonable accommodations considered for disabilities).
• Professional appearance and a courteous, friendly disposition.
• Ability to work well within a team, remain self-motivated, and manage tasks independently while demonstrating sound judgment and initiative.
• Physical ability to perform the job’s demands with a satisfactory sickness record over two years unless related to permanent disability or pregnancy.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with patients, colleagues, and visitors.
• Experience in a demanding work environment and an understanding of security risks are essential.
• Some experience in facilities, estates environments, or customer/patient focused settings and basic IT knowledge are beneficial.
• Basic literacy and numeracy are required, with first aid certification being an advantage.

Compensation and Contract

This is a permanent position under Agenda for Change Band 2, offering an annual salary of £25,272. Flexible working options are available within the full-time framework.
