Role Overview
We are searching for a motivated Executive Underwriter specializing in Mid-Market risks, who brings a minimum of 5 years property and casualty underwriting experience. This role involves underwriting complex and strategic risks, fostering and expanding broker and client relationships, and driving growth along with profitability for our Mid-Market portfolio. Reporting to the Head of Mid-Market, you will serve as a trusted technical expert, influence underwriting strategies, support portfolio management, mentor peers, and help steer the business’s future direction.
Key Duties
- Lead the underwriting process for complex Mid-Market new and renewal risks within defined authority and risk appetite.
- Develop, manage, and expand a profitable business portfolio with full accountability for retention, growth, underwriting standards, and profitability.
- Form and nurture strategic relationships with brokers and clients, providing expert advice on intricate underwriting issues.
- Contribute to defining underwriting appetites, portfolio plans, and distribution tactics.
- Represent HDI in meetings with brokers and clients, negotiations, as well as industry gatherings to bolster relationships and improve market presence.
- Maintain rigorous governance standards ensuring precise underwriting files, policy documents, data integrity, and adherence to compliance and regulations.
- Offer senior-level technical consultation on complex risks, guiding underwriting structures, pricing, coverage options, and risk selection.
- Provide mentoring and leadership to underwriting team members, fostering skill development and professional excellence.
- Support portfolio reporting, business strategy formulation, and initiatives aligned with corporate goals.
Candidate Profile
- A minimum of 5 years professional experience in property and casualty underwriting, handling complex mid-market risks.
- In-depth knowledge of property and casualty policy wordings, pricing, underwriting, and risk evaluation.
- Proven capacity to make informed underwriting decisions and manage portfolios for profitable growth.
- Strong leadership and technical skills with a talent for mentoring and influencing underwriting teams.
- Entrepreneurial mindset with demonstrated success in broker relationship management and business development.
- Bachelor’s degree is required alongside a CIP designation; FCIP designation considered an advantage.
- Effective organizational abilities to juggle multiple priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
- Excellent negotiation, analytical, problem-solving skills and strong commercial awareness.
- Fluency in English with excellent verbal and written communication skills; knowledge of French and/or German is a plus.
- Comfortable with underwriting software and Microsoft Office suite.
- Capable of working independently while balancing strategic focus and day-to-day execution.
- Willingness for occasional travel to important markets.
