About the Opportunity
The Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), is inviting applications for the position of Executive Director. Located within Education City, Doha, HBKU is dedicated to world-class graduate and select undergraduate academic programs, fostering national research centers and leaders poised to drive impactful change. QCRI specializes in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence research areas pivotal to Qatar's transition towards a knowledge-based economy. Established in 2010, QCRI focuses on Arabic Natural Language Processing, Cybersecurity, Data Management Systems, Health Informatics, and Social Computing, and has been instrumental in AI innovations such as Fanar, an Arabic-centric Multimodal AI model.
Role Responsibilities
- Design and execute a research strategy that aligns with HBKU, Qatar Foundation, national priorities, and global scientific advancements.
- Provide visionary scientific and organizational leadership to uplift QCRI’s mission and research quality.
- Lead interdisciplinary research programs addressing both national and international challenges.
- Forge and nurture strategic collaborations with academia, industry, government bodies, and global technology firms.
- Enhance QCRI’s global standing through scientific excellence, partnerships, and landmark research projects.
- Translate research outcomes into impactful publications, technologies, platforms, products, and policy contributions.
- Increase external funding sources and manage strategic investments to sustain research growth.
- Facilitate collaboration across HBKU, Qatar Foundation, and external stakeholders to boost innovation impact.
- Oversee recruitment, development, and retention of exceptional researchers, cultivating a high-performance culture.
- Mentor emerging researchers and scientific leaders, with emphasis on developing local talent.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related discipline with an internationally recognized record of research excellence and scientific impact.
- Significant experience managing research and technology development, including leadership of large-scale programs and teams.
- Proven expertise in overseeing research, innovation, and technology projects with demonstrated leadership skills.
- Ability to build, lead, mentor, and motivate high-performing multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong knowledge of international and national policies, ethical considerations pertaining to computing, AI, and digital technologies.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management capabilities; proficiency in Arabic is considered a plus.
