Role Overview
The Executive Director is the central figure in the organization, reporting directly to the Board. This leadership position is responsible for setting strategic direction, overseeing programs and partnerships, and ensuring the institution’s resource and operational foundations are solid for sustained impact. This role involves shaping the evolution of a growing institution in collaboration with a dedicated team and a network of fellows and convenors.
Core Responsibilities
- Develop and implement the organization’s strategy in close collaboration with the Board
- Serve as the face of the Initiative when engaging with senior leaders from government, philanthropic organizations, and the private sector
- Lead efforts to mobilize resources and nurture long-term partnerships with funders aligned with the Initiative’s mission
- Oversee program design and delivery ensuring excellence and the integration of strong monitoring, evaluation, and learning practices
- Build and support a high-performing team while managing financial, governance, and operational functions effectively
- Strengthen ties within the Aspen global network and regional partners, providing visionary leadership advocating ethical, values-driven leadership throughout Africa
Essential Qualifications and Attributes
- Deep alignment with the mission and philosophy of leadership as service beyond status
- Demonstrated experience in leading and expanding an organization or major program, preferably within nonprofit, policy, or development sectors
- Proven success in securing funding and managing donor relations
- Strong strategic, financial, and governance acumen
- An entrepreneurial and cooperative approach suited to a dynamic growth-stage environment
- Exceptional communication and public speaking skills with the ability to engage senior stakeholders credibly
