Overview

CTS Excavations is actively looking for a meticulous and knowledgeable Estimator to prepare precise and competitive bids for various site development projects such as mass grading, site utilities, storm sewer installation, paving, and finishing works. This role demands expertise in reviewing project plans and specifications, analyzing vendor and subcontractor quotes, quantity takeoffs, and supporting the preconstruction team in producing competitive proposals.

Responsibilities

  • Examine project documentation including plans, specifications, and bid invitations.
  • Calculate quantities for earthwork, grading, utilities, storm drainage, demolition, and related site tasks.
  • Create detailed cost estimates covering labor, equipment, materials, trucking, subcontractors, and production rates.
  • Request and assess pricing from suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Prepare and submit competitive bids before deadlines.
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings and site visits when required.
  • Collaborate with project managers and field supervisors during project transition phases.
  • Maintain and update historical cost data and estimating databases.
  • Identify risks and opportunities for value engineering within projects.
  • Coordinate scheduling and workforce planning with ownership and operations.
  • Assist in contract review and clarifying scopes of work.
  • Monitor performance of awarded projects compared to estimates to drive improvements.

Day-to-Day Activities

  • Analyze incoming Invitations to Bid.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs regularly.
  • Communicate with suppliers and subcontractors for up-to-date pricing.
  • Coordinate with operations teams regarding production details.
  • Develop estimates and compile bid proposals.
  • Submit bids and track their results.
  • Provide support during project startups upon bid awards.

Qualifications

  • Experience in excavation, civil construction, grading, utilities installation, or heavy construction estimating.
  • Capability to interpret civil engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Strong knowledge of excavation techniques, equipment use, and production rates.
  • Proficiency with estimating software and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent mathematical, analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple bids and meet tight deadlines.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Experience

  • Three to five or more years' experience in estimating for site development or closely related construction sectors.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related fields preferred.
  • Strong skills in verbal and written communication.
  • Familiarity with HCSS Heavy Bid, Revu, Bluebeam, Agtek, and MS Excel software.
  • In-depth understanding of construction methods for DOT, municipal, commercial, or residential projects.
  • Relevant experience in residential and commercial sitework construction operations.
