Job description
Role Summary
Reporting to the Estimating Director, the Estimator is tasked with delivering precise estimates and subcontractor costing from initial budgeting through to contract awarding and planning stages, specifically on large-scale projects valued above $50 million. This role is situated in the Mississauga, Ontario office.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare estimates following company protocols, including quantity takeoffs and pricing for internal crews and select subcontractor work.
- Request and gather price quotes from subcontractors and suppliers.
- Calculate general expenses and contribute inputs on margin and fee structures.
- Examine project documentation comprehensively and analyze subcontractor prerequisites.
- Identify project risks and opportunities, proposing strategies to gain competitive advantages.
- Engage with clients and consultants for clarifications or further elaborations as required.
- Create preliminary construction schedules based on inputs from subcontractors and in-house teams to support pricing of time-related items.
- Compile issue summaries and participate actively in detailed estimate reviews.
- Lead or contribute to finalizing estimates and tender submissions.
- Support post-tender processes, including submission preparation and negotiations.
- Participate in project development phases such as scope definition, preconstruction planning, control estimate creation, and delivery.
- Provide preconstruction services encompassing initial budgets, cost planning, and value engineering solutions.
- Identify leads and opportunities through networking with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and industry contacts.
- Maintain and update databases relating to labour rates, materials pricing, and project expenses for future reference.
- Develop conceptual estimates leveraging historical data interpretations.
- Leverage technical expertise to act as a subject matter expert for RFQs, RFPs, and EOIs, which involves crafting and reviewing written narratives, providing project-specific data, and supporting resume updates.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
- Undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related construction program.
- Eligibility for or attainment of Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS) or Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) designation.
- Between 3 to 5+ years of practical estimating experience covering a wide range of project delivery methods within Institutional, Commercial, and Industrial (ICI) construction projects.
- Comprehensive knowledge of estimating methods, tendering processes, and contract negotiation tactics.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction documents such as blueprints, specifications, and other technical data.
- Experience using estimating software including InEight and On-screen Takeoff.
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Adobe applications.
