Job description

Role Overview

The Estimator will be tasked with generating precise and competitive cost estimates for construction initiatives, assisting the Commercial and Estimating teams during the pre-contract period. This role encompasses the quantifying and pricing of work, reviewing drawings and specifications, coordinating with supply chain collaborators, and maintaining up-to-date estimating records to enable sound commercial decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create detailed cost estimates, bills of quantities, and measurement take-offs derived from project drawings, specifications, and tender documents in line with tender specifications.
  • Review tender documentation and site data to pinpoint risks, exclusions, provisional sums, and opportunities, incorporating these into the cost assumptions.
  • Solicit, assess, and compare quotes from subcontractors and suppliers, confirming compliance with scope and schedule, and record findings for commercial evaluation.
  • Keep cost databases, standard estimate formats, and precedent records current to enhance consistency and efficiency in estimating procedures.
  • Work closely with design, commercial, and construction teams to resolve technical queries, verify assumptions, and align project programming, methods, and costs.
  • Compile pricing breakdowns, cost summaries, and tender submission packages (both digital and printed) for review by senior management and clients.
  • Contribute to risk mitigation by preparing contingency provisions, conducting sensitivity analyses, and identifying potential cost reductions.
  • Maintain thorough documentation within the Document Management System and estimating archives to ensure transparency and audit readiness.
  • Engage in bid meetings by generating minutes, tracking follow-up actions, and providing timely updates on pricing progress to relevant parties.
  • Comply with company policies on health & safety, quality standards, and data protection throughout all estimating tasks.

Candidate Requirements

  • Demonstrable experience as a construction Estimator, ideally within a main contracting or consultancy environment, with familiarity in commercial tendering workflows.
  • Strong numerical skills paired with meticulous attention to detail and experience in preparing measurement take-offs and bills of quantities.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook; knowledge of estimating software, cost databases, and Document Management Systems is advantageous.
  • Solid comprehension of construction methodologies, equipment, materials, and subcontract procurement strategies.
  • Excellent organizational and time management capabilities to prioritize duties and adhere to strict tender deadlines.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills enabling professional engagement with clients, colleagues, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Self-driven, proactive with a solution-oriented mindset, and capable of working independently or collaboratively within a team.

Rewards & Benefits

  • Competitive remuneration including pension schemes, support for professional memberships, and further company-specific benefits.
  • Access to professional growth, ongoing training, and potential long-term career advancement within the organization.
