Job description

Position Overview

This contract role engages environmental engineers to assist in training and assessing advanced AI systems tackling intricate environmental challenges, including water and wastewater treatment, air pollution management, hazardous waste cleanup, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize and formulate complex, domain-specific engineering problems such as contaminant transport, mass balance in treatment plants, hydrological processes, and Life Cycle Assessments (LCA).
  • Create comprehensive, stepwise technical solutions covering areas like chemical dosing, hydraulic flow modeling, and pollutant dispersion, serving as reference benchmarks for AI training.
  • Critically assess AI-generated environmental remediation strategies, impact analyses, and mathematical demonstrations to verify technical accuracy, regulatory adherence (including EPA and ISO 14001 standards), and safety considerations.
  • Enhance AI reasoning by detecting logical inaccuracies, for example, errors in stoichiometric calculations or oversight of secondary environmental effects, and provide structured corrective feedback.

Candidate Profile

  • Currently pursuing or possessing a Master's or PhD degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering with an environmental emphasis, or closely related fields.
  • Strong expertise in one or several areas such as aquatic chemistry, wastewater process engineering, air quality engineering, or hazardous waste management.
  • Ability to clearly and accurately communicate complex engineering and ecological concepts in writing.
  • Highly detail-oriented with aptitude for identifying errors involving unit conversions, chemical equations, and gaps in regulatory logic.
  • No prior experience with AI is necessary as onboarding and training will be provided.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in data annotation, quality assurance, or evaluation processes.
  • Familiarity with environmental simulation tools like SWMM, AERMOD, or various EPA modeling software.
  • Background in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) compliance or environmental consulting.

Additional Information

  • This position offers flexible scheduling from 10 to 40 hours weekly and is fully remote, allowing work from any location.
  • Collaborate on pioneering AI initiatives alongside leading AI research institutions globally.
  • Enjoy freelance work benefits including autonomy, diverse assignments, and international teamwork.
  • Gain direct insight into how large language models are developed and assessed.
  • Opportunities may exist for contract renewal or extension.
  • Your domain expertise will directly influence the improvement and reliability of AI in critical environmental applications.
