Role Overview

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Metadata team responsible for the metadata layer of the dbt platform, covering discovery APIs, catalog, lineage, and run history services that empower customers to understand and trust their data assets. This role involves overseeing technical quality, product delivery, and team growth while collaborating closely with product teams to expand discovery and catalog features.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team of software engineers through hiring, onboarding, coaching, setting career development plans, and conducting regular one-on-ones.
• Manage project delivery aligned with quarterly plans and ensure services meet uptime and latency targets for enterprise and single-tenant customers.
• Review technical designs and code to maintain architectural integrity in distributed cloud-based systems.
• Drive technical excellence by addressing incidents, bugs, technical debt, and conducting post-mortems within agreed service levels.
• Collaborate with product and business stakeholders to plan, prioritize, and maintain a realistic backlog with high completion rates.
• Communicate the engineering vision and strategy clearly within the team and across adjacent teams.
• Implement and ensure adherence to engineering processes such as the software development lifecycle (FDLC).
• Delegate effectively while fostering autonomy and a positive, trust-based team culture.
• Resolve performance-related issues and conflicts swiftly and fairly.
• Ensure the team leverages AI-powered tools like GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, and conversational AI to accelerate development and improve SDLC outputs including test-driven development documentation, PRDs, post-mortems, and test plans.

Essential Qualifications

• Proven experience managing and scaling software engineering teams, ideally focused on customer-facing product development, including full hiring and performance management cycles.
• Strong technical expertise with capability to review design and code and make architectural decisions in distributed, cloud-based environments.
• Demonstrated track record of delivering complex projects on time while upholding quality, reliability, and performance standards.
• Experience managing production services with responsibilities including incident response, on-call practices, reduction of technical debt, and SLA compliance.
• Ability to work closely with product teams to prioritize work, maintain accurate backlogs, and achieve high completion rates in sprints and quarters.
• Excellent communication skills to inform and align teams and stakeholders effectively.
• Proficiency in using AI tools for software development and establishing these practices within teams.

Preferred Skills

• Background in building or operating metadata, catalog, lineage, or search/discovery systems.
• Experience with GraphQL APIs and handling high-throughput, multi-tenant data services.
• Familiarity with analytics engineering processes and the dbt ecosystem.
• Experience supporting enterprise or single-tenant customers with stringent reliability and latency requirements.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this role in Ontario is CAD 186,701 to 233,376 annually, which may include sales incentives or bonuses depending on role and level. Compensation is influenced by skills, experience, education, business needs, and market factors.
