Job description
About the Role
An early-stage AI startup is searching for its inaugural Engineering Manager to lead and expand the engineering team. Previously reporting directly to the CTO, the growing business now requires someone to take charge of team development, recruitment, and project delivery.
Responsibilities
You will collaborate closely with the CTO and founders to define how the engineering team functions, oversee individual engineer growth, and foster an environment enabling top performance with minimal unnecessary bureaucracy.
Key tasks include identifying talent gaps, participating actively in hiring decisions, and thoughtfully scaling the team to match the company's evolving needs. You will manage software delivery, assisting the team in setting achievable commitments, detecting issues early, and providing the CTO with reliable progress updates without micromanagement.
There is a unique focus on AI integration; the team utilizes coding agents daily, and you'll help shape best engineering practices as AI transforms software development, influencing code review, testing, planning, and quality assurances.
Candidate Profile
- Experience transitioning from a software engineering role into management, with a proven track record of leading teams through significant growth phases.
- Ability to analyze what methods succeed and fail as teams expand and implement effective solutions.
- Comfortability operating within a fast-paced, early-stage environment that offers autonomy but demands timely and relevant structure introduction.
- Strong commitment to nurturing personnel development and making informed hiring decisions while maintaining technical credibility.
- Active personal use of AI tools in current workflows, beyond simply tracking industry trends.
- Desire to assume ownership as the first person in this critical management position and willingness to collaborate closely with senior leadership to build sustainable team practices.
Why Consider This Opportunity
- Direct impact on shaping the engineering division’s evolution alongside the CTO and founders.
- Chance to strengthen an already capable and motivated team without compromising its core strengths.
- Enjoy high ownership and visible influence on business growth through engineering leadership.
