Role Overview
We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the development team behind AutoReview, CoLab's AI-enhanced mechanical design review system. This leadership role demands significant technical expertise. While you won't be coding every feature, you should have a strong grasp of software and web architectures to critically assess solutions, validate estimates, and pose challenging questions that drive projects forward.
You will collaborate closely with Product Management to transform broad concepts into actionable roadmaps. Your responsibilities will include evaluating early feasibility and scope, then empowering engineering teams with the context and autonomy needed to execute with confidence.
The engineering challenges encompass design for manufacturability (DFM) validations, collision detection, bill of materials (BOM) consolidation, clearance checks, bulk AutoReview workflows, and increasingly, integrating 2D engineering data with machine learning techniques.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Experienced managing engineers working on sophisticated web applications, ideally related to geometry, 3D modeling, geometric computations, CAD, graphics, or related technical domains.
- Deeply committed to supporting people while maintaining a clear understanding of the technology being developed. Able to identify risks early without becoming a bottleneck for decision making.
- Your leadership focuses on providing clarity that channels the team's natural ambition toward meaningful problems.
- Skilled in fostering constructive and respectful partnerships between Engineering and Product groups, especially when navigating uncertainty.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and support the engineers developing AutoReview.
- Collaborate with Product to define priorities, evaluate feasibility, estimate scope, and create achievable timelines.
- Maintain broad technical awareness to identify risks, dependencies, and questionable assumptions early in projects.
- Drive delivery of major initiatives including DFM checks, assembly analysis, and bulk review workflows.
- Coordinate efforts with Engineering, Product, and Applied Machine Learning teams as AutoReview evolves into domains with emerging ownership and technical approaches.
- Provide focused direction amid shifting priorities due to new customer feedback, technical advances, or progress in AI/ML.
- Cultivate an environment where engineers have clear context, meaningful ownership, and ample support to excel.
Qualifications
- Proven experience managing software engineering teams in complex product environments.
- Solid knowledge of modern web and software architecture.
- Experience with geometry-related technologies such as 3D modeling, CAD applications, geometric processing, or graphics is a significant plus.
- Proven ability to partner with Product teams on roadmaps, feasibility assessments, estimation, and prioritization.
- Comfortable navigating the evolving landscape of AI and machine learning technologies and understanding their product and architectural implications.
- Capable of rapidly assimilating new information, making informed decisions, and clearly communicating trade-offs.
