Job description
About the Role
Join JUPUS as an Engineering Manager positioned at the forefront of AI innovation in legal technology. Our AI supports over 2,000 lawyers daily and is fully integrated into active customer-facing products. You will lead the AI engineering team, steer the technical roadmap, and establish standards for all development. Reporting to the Head of Engineering, this leadership role focuses on team empowerment and strategic decision-making rather than individual feature delivery.
Key Challenges and Objectives
The legal industry is heavily reliant on document processing and expert judgement and remains largely untapped by AI solutions. Having trained on over one million German court rulings, the challenge is to create AI outputs reliable enough for legal professionals to trust. Your role is to institutionalize this expertise, turning evolving AI developments into actionable, value-driven solutions while navigating an environment with abundant noise in AI advancements.
Responsibilities
- Enhance the team quality by recruiting, mentoring, and raising performance standards, ensuring deliverables remain consistent without your direct involvement.
- Define engineering protocols specific to AI such as evaluation strategies, monitoring, testing procedures, and maintain a robust delivery cadence under pressure.
- Manage rapid delivery demands characteristic of a startup without compromising the precision essential to legal applications.
- Lead the technical roadmap covering architecture, agent framework, data retrieval, evaluation, and observability, providing decisive reviews without writing code personally.
- Collaborate closely with product teams to balance product visions with technical feasibility and cost-effectiveness.
- Discern significant trends from ephemeral AI developments and translate them into strategic initiatives.
- Facilitate the integration of AI into practical product workflows by partnering with design and engineering teams.
- Elevate AI understanding and capability across various teams within the organization.
- Communicate complex AI topics effectively to diverse audiences including engineers and executives without oversimplification.
Candidate Requirements
- Proven leadership experience managing engineering teams, demonstrated by direct reports and measurable team growth.
- Ability to influence outcomes through cross-functional teams such as product managers and domain specialists.
- Experience leading high-performing teams with tight deadlines and making pragmatic decisions on project scope and priorities.
- Minimum of three years at an organization where generative or agentic AI is integral to the product.
- Track record of delivering agentic AI systems to production environments (prototype or demo experience insufficient).
- Strong technical understanding of retrieval quality, evaluation metrics, observability, and agent design with an eye for optimal solutions.
- Candidate must be based within Central European Time zone plus or minus two hours.
- Preferred qualifications include formal education in AI or machine learning, experience transforming products to AI-native, knowledge of frameworks like LangGraph, MCP, LangSmith, Langfuse, and familiarity with legal tech or regulated industries.
Benefits
- Complete ownership over AI team, roadmap, and engineering standards without bureaucratic barriers.
- Opportunity to innovate in a largely untapped professional market involving agentic AI used daily by thousands of lawyers.
- Join a growth-stage company with €19.5 million funding and a rapidly expanding team.
- Work fully remotely, offering geographical flexibility.
- Provision of premium equipment including state-of-the-art MacBook and accessories.
- Access to wellbeing benefits such as Urban Sports Club membership to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
