Economist

Overview

The Economist Service represents a leading cohort of economists within Singapore's public sector, dedicated to enhancing economic analysis to strengthen public policies. Economists are deployed across various ministries such as Trade and Industry, Finance, Manpower, Social and Family Development, Health, and Sustainability and the Environment. The role involves contributing expertise to a broad spectrum of public policies, including economic, fiscal, social, health, security, and infrastructure domains.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct surveillance and forecasting by staying updated on global and domestic economic trends and evaluating their impacts on Singapore's economy, such as shifts in supply chains.
• Perform economic research on topics relevant to public policy, including assessing the effects of government policies and schemes on firms and individuals.
• Support policy analysis, including planning and executing public policies and evaluating initiatives like tourism projects.

Initially, economists generally join the Ministry of Trade and Industry's Economics Division, where they engage with diverse issues such as economic growth, inflation, international trade, industrial strategy, labour markets, productivity, and innovation, while gaining proficiency in data science-related research and analysis.

Candidate Profile

• A Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate degree in Economics or quantitatively rigorous disciplines such as Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Engineering, or related fields.
• A strong enthusiasm for empirical research coupled with practical experience in employing quantitative methods to unravel complex problems.
• Demonstrated quantitative capabilities, for example in econometrics and data science techniques, to support forecasting, policy modeling, simulation, and impact assessments.
• Exceptional communication skills to articulate complex concepts clearly and logically.
• Proficiency using statistical and programming tools such as STATA, R, and Python.
