Position Overview

Under general supervision of the Resource Management Officer and direct guidance of the Supply Chain Officer in Bujumbura, the Driver's primary responsibility is safely transporting IOM personnel, partners, and authorized goods within cities and to field locations using IOM vehicles. This role requires ensuring vehicle maintenance, security, and documentation aligned with organizational standards.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate designated IOM vehicles to convey staff and partners safely and punctually.
  • Regularly check vehicle roadworthiness, including tires, brakes, engine oil, and belts, and arrange minor repairs and cleaning as necessary.
  • Maintain vehicle service schedules and keep detailed records of spare parts with monthly inventories.
  • Plan and navigate direct and secure routes to destinations utilizing best available roads.
  • Ensure vehicles are used strictly for authorized official business as directed by supervisors.
  • Maintain daily logs and compile monthly reports on mileage, fuel consumption, and other operational metrics.
  • Exercise discretion and confidentiality in all interactions involving IOM officials and operations.
  • Enhance security by mitigating potential threats near vehicles and transportation routes.
  • Meet official visitors at airports and assist with customs and immigration protocols.
  • Handle collection and delivery of mail, documents, and packages between the country office, project sites, UN agencies, government offices, and other locations, maintaining appropriate records.
  • Support office staff with basic clerical tasks such as phone handling, photocopying, and record keeping when required.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Completion of high school or equivalent with at least two years of relevant work experience, or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Possession of a valid national driver’s license.
  • Proficient knowledge of driving regulations and rules.
  • Experience operating various vehicle types and makes.
  • Capability to perform minor mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance.
  • Familiarity with radio, telephone, email, and other communication tools.

Skills and Competencies

  • Understanding of UN and bilateral donor requirements.
  • Knowledge of road safety standards and UNDSS security practices.
  • Proficient in preventive vehicle upkeep and conducting basic mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Experience managing fleet records including logbooks, fuel consumption data, and vehicle inspections.
  • Ability to operate diverse vehicles such as 4x4s, buses, trucks, and armored cars.
  • Experience in route planning and navigating to remote and urban locations.
  • Competence in ensuring secure transport for personnel, visitors, cargo, and sensitive materials.
  • Basic computer literacy including email, GPS-based systems, mobile applications, and vehicle tracking technologies.

Languages

Fluency in French and Kirundi, both spoken and written, is mandatory. A working knowledge of English is advantageous. Language proficiency will be assessed during the selection process.

Additional Information

This position is exclusively open to nationals. Candidates must meet medical, visa, residency, and security clearance requirements prior to appointment. The selection process may be used to fill similar roles in different locations, and selected candidates may remain eligible for related appointments over a 24-month period. IOM adheres to a strict zero-tolerance policy on conduct violations, including sexual exploitation and discrimination.
