Job description

Overview

The Director of Software Engineering is responsible for leading, mentoring, and managing managers and teams within the software engineering department, overseeing several teams or a medium-sized product portfolio. The role emphasizes developing people and processes to enable high-performing, autonomous teams that achieve goals in an agile environment aligned with the company’s vision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead multiple teams effectively to meet organizational goals and delivery commitments.
  • Ensure high quality and timely delivery of various projects under the department.
  • Define and monitor goals and key performance indicators to measure success and suggest process enhancements.
  • Manage organizational resources including staffing plans, budgets, skill development, and acquisition of necessary tools and technology.
  • Engage in succession planning for critical roles within the Agile framework.
  • Set performance standards, approve staff management plans including disciplinary actions.
  • Attract, hire, and retain exceptional engineering talent.
  • Support engineering functions across development, quality assurance, and DevOps.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver market-ready high-quality products efficiently.
  • Remain focused on customer requirements and market trends.
  • Share insights and best practices regularly to improve organizational effectiveness.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and handle escalations beyond team capacity, escalating upwards as needed.
  • Drive delivery of the Technology Roadmap within allocated budgets.
  • Represent the company in industry forums, customer relations, and partnerships.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and growth mindset among employees.
  • Offer coaching and mentorship to support career development, team collaboration, and adoption of Agile methodologies.
  • Maintain strict compliance with confidentiality and HIPAA guidelines related to company operations.
  • Participate in on-call rotations to address critical issues outside normal working hours adhering to SLA requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 12 years of relevant professional experience, ideally including software engineering background.
  • At least 6 years in managing teams and departments of various sizes.
  • Familiarity with industry concepts, best practices, and procedures in software engineering leadership.
  • Demonstrated growth mindset and openness to feedback.
  • Strong leadership skills to inspire and motivate teams.
  • Proficient coaching and mentoring capabilities.
  • Ability to build lasting professional relationships and navigate constructive conflict.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to align teams with shared objectives.
  • Experience supporting self-organizing teams and taking calculated risks confidently.
  • Capable decision-making under pressure with accountability for outcomes.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Primarily sedentary work involving prolonged sitting.
  • Occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force.
  • Frequent movement involving lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or repetitive motions.
  • Indoor office environment.
  • Up to 25% local travel typically for training purposes.
