Job description
About the Role
Qatar Airways is looking for a skilled and motivated Development Engineer Level 2 to join the Engineering Technical Services team. This role involves delivering timely, accurate, and compliant engineering support for daily fleet operations under the guidance of the Manager - Technical Services. The position supports ongoing airworthiness, aircraft availability, dispatch reliability, and the effective recovery from technical disruptions by evaluating defects, coordinating technical solutions, and preparing controlled engineering documents.
The role collaborates closely with the Engineering Operations Centre, Maintenance teams (Line, Light, Heavy), Fleet Engineering, Reliability, Supply Chain, OEMs, MROs, and approved Design Organization providers. Additionally, it contributes to proactive defect management, technical investigations, and predictive maintenance efforts to minimize repeat faults and unscheduled maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver operational engineering support in line with authorized Technical Services procedures, process guidelines, and assigned shifts or on-call duties.
- Serve as the main Technical Services point for assigned aircraft defects, technical incidents, delays, and operational disturbances by assessing technical logs, maintenance findings, fault messages, defect history, troubleshooting, and approved maintenance data to determine safe and compliant next steps.
- Provide technical guidance to Line, Light, and Heavy Maintenance teams within approved procedures and authorization levels. Support effective shift handovers, attend operational meetings, update engineering status, and complete assigned tasks on time.
- Maintain case management systems, technical records, action logs, and correspondence to ensure comprehensive, accurate, and traceable engineering decisions.
- Assist with Aircraft on Ground (AOG) situations from assessment through resolution by coordinating information with OEMs, MROs, vendors, field representatives, and Design Organizations.
- Evaluate repair and recovery options against maintenance data, airworthiness standards, resources, operational impacts, and compliance requirements; monitor external support and escalate any issues impacting recovery.
- Manage extended AOG events by maintaining detailed action plans, decision documentation, ownership clarity, communication updates, and conducting post-event reviews with recommendations.
- Oversee deferred defect monitoring and ensure adherence to MEL, CDL, maintenance programs, regulations, and company policies; escalate any safety, compliance, or reliability concerns.
- Prepare and aid assessment of operational concessions, engineering instructions, and approvals within authorization, ensuring clear communication of constraints, controls, procedures, and rectification plans.
- Ensure that extensions or deviations related to deferred defects are supported only by approved data and authorized by appropriate authorities.
- Produce and process engineering documentation including Service Work Requests, Engineering Approvals, technical instructions, concession packages, and investigation reports, following verified data and applicability checks.
- Create clear technical documents defining issues, engineering rationale, required actions, acceptance criteria, documentation needs, and follow-up activities; ensure damage reports and requests to Design Organizations include full and accurate information.
- Review submissions from OEMs and Design Organizations for technical accuracy, completeness, limitations, and implementation requirements while safeguarding controlled technical information according to retention policies.
- Monitor trends in defects, repeated faults, maintenance findings, component removals, and disruptions to identify reliability issues using authorized predictive maintenance and aircraft health-monitoring tools.
- Differentiated actionable predictive alerts from nonconclusive data, document engineering justifications, support proactive maintenance, and drive improvements in reliability and continuous improvement projects.
- Communicate technical information effectively to stakeholders; coordinate with internal departments and external vendors to ensure timely query resolution, escalate significant concerns, and provide consistent status updates through approved communication channels.
- Offer technical recommendations and coordinate actions within delegated authority, applicable procedures, and current technical information while avoiding approvals beyond authorized limits.
- Promptly escalate unsafe conditions, compliance risks, conflicting instructions, configuration control issues, overdue limitations, operational hazards, delayed responses, or risks to recovery targets; ensure proper handover of unresolved matters.
- Utilize quieter periods to advance reporting, investigations, record reviews, procedures updates, and backlog resolution; support continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and enhancements to Technical Services processes and tools.
- Mentor and develop junior engineers, Qatari National Developees, and new team members fostering a collaborative, responsible, and safety-driven culture whilst identifying resource or skills gaps.
About You
- Holds a Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, Aeronautical) or equivalent, or possesses an ICAO Type II License with at least 4 years relevant work experience.
- Have professional experience in airworthiness, reliability, or technical support engineering roles within a reputable airline's continuing airworthiness maintenance organization.
- Possess solid knowledge of aircraft systems, power plants, and structural components; ideally trained on one or more aircraft types operated by Qatar Airways.
- Experienced in using Airbus Technical Request and Boeing Service Request software applications.
- Understand internal company policies, procedures, capabilities, and limitations thoroughly.
- Strong problem analysis and effective decision-making skills.
- Proactive mindset with initiative-taking abilities.
- Sound analytical competencies and good judgment skills.
