Job description
Introduction
We are looking for a Design Engineer to join our team. This unique role blends creative design with coding expertise to deliver innovative user experiences. As a Design Engineer at Ashby, you'll combine your skills in both design and software development to tackle complex design challenges, improve and expand our internal design system, and collaborate with product engineers on customized design solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Redesigning applications by engaging with users to gather insights, wireframing new workflows, implementing design systems, and transforming wireframes into polished user interfaces.
- Developing flexible, reusable UI components to empower engineers to create consistent and attractive user experiences across the product.
- Collaborating with product engineers to enhance information architecture and usability to improve the clarity and impact of the UI, such as for candidate assessment views.
Who Should Apply and Who Should Not
The role requires versatility beyond just design systems or exhaustive pre-implementation research; it emphasizes speedy iteration, shipping features early, and improving them based on user and business feedback. Candidates should have strong visual design instincts, enjoy working with minimal process oversight, and be comfortable handling diverse tasks, including customer support.
- If you prefer working exclusively on design systems, this role is not a fit.
- If you need thorough research and perfection before releasing features, this role’s fast iteration culture might not suit you.
- Candidates lacking strong design taste and execution skills should reconsider.
- If structured project management processes are essential for your productivity, this environment with high engineer autonomy could be challenging.
- This role involves diverse responsibilities including less glamorous tasks, so purely seeking exciting work might not align with this position.
Seniority Levels
- Junior Design Engineer: Up to 2 years of industry experience; should demonstrate emerging talent in design and engineering.
- Design Engineer (Mid to Senior Level): At least 2 years of continuous engineering or design experience with strong proficiency in both areas and a track record of designing and shipping products to multiple users.
- Staff Design Engineer: Experienced practitioners who have made significant contributions to design systems and product features used by hundreds of users and iterate based on feedback.
