Job description
About the Role
Flogas Ireland is looking for a Data Engineering Lead to define the technical vision and oversee delivery for its unified data and analytics engineering platform. This leadership role involves managing a team of Data Engineers and establishing architecture, standards, and strategy for data ingestion, modelling, and pipeline reliability using Microsoft Fabric technologies. The focus is on building scalable, dependable, long-term data infrastructure that supports efficient reporting and advanced analytics.
Key Responsibilities
- Define the technical strategy and platform architecture spanning data ingestion pipelines to semantic and transformation layers, applying best practices such as the Medallion Architecture and consistent data modelling standards within Microsoft Fabric.
- Manage and mentor the data engineering team by providing guidance, coaching, and supporting their professional growth.
- Ensure the data platform's stability, scalability, cost effectiveness, and develop the roadmap prioritizing data modelling and layered architectural components (bronze, silver, gold).
- Implement and uphold documentation standards for data models and pipelines in the data catalog to facilitate self-service analytics and reduce dependency on key personnel.
- Collaborate closely with Business Intelligence, Reporting, and Data Governance teams to maintain robust, governed data flows from raw data to certified analytical datasets.
- Engage with senior leadership to translate business priorities into feasible delivery plans; represent data engineering in strategic discussions.
- Lead recruitment efforts, including onboarding and conducting technical evaluations as the team expands.
- Promote engineering best practices such as code reviews, testing, continuous integration/delivery (CI/CD), version control, and comprehensive documentation to elevate standards across the data & analytics functions.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Demonstrated experience as a senior or lead Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer, or a related role with strong hands-on expertise in data modelling.
- Proficiency in SQL and Python programming combined with practical experience with modern cloud data platforms like Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse, Databricks, or Snowflake.
- In-depth knowledge of Medallion/lakehouse architecture, dimensional data modelling, and modern transformation frameworks such as dbt.
- Proven capability to set architectural standards and technical direction covering both pipeline engineering and data modelling.
- Experience leading technical teams, including providing coaching and managing performance.
- Strong ability to engage stakeholders and align technical roadmaps with business objectives.
- Sound judgement in balancing rapid delivery, technical debt, and mitigating platform risks.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Background in energy, utilities, or regulated sectors.
- Comprehensive understanding of Microsoft Fabric from a platform ownership perspective.
- Experience growing and scaling combined data engineering teams from small bases.
- Familiarity with data governance and cataloging tools such as Microsoft Purview.
- Established practices for data testing and CI/CD pipelines in analytics codebases.
- Knowledge of Semantic Link Labs library and related technologies.
Benefits and Additional Information
- Competitive salary package.
- Performance-based bonus scheme.
- Access to training programs and career development pathways.
- Opportunity for advancement in a fast-expanding renewable energy company.
- Flexible and hybrid work arrangements available.
- Company pension scheme participation.
- Generous annual leave plus statutory public holidays.
- Employee wellbeing initiatives.
- Chance to contribute meaningfully to the transition towards a low-carbon future.
