Job description
Role overview
Rakuten Kobo Inc. is hiring an experienced Data Analyst to join its Data Storytelling & Insights team and work closely with the engineering foundations group. The position combines hands-on ownership of analytics-ready data with the ability to turn complex data into practical, easy-to-understand insights. You will support the full analytics lifecycle by creating scalable and dependable data models and collaborating with stakeholders on dashboards and analyses that shape business decisions.
What you’ll do
- Develop, maintain, and improve analytics-ready data models and pipelines with Dataform and BigQuery, including the transition of older logic into more reusable, maintainable, and better-governed data assets.
- Make sure analytics code and pipelines are dependable, clearly documented, and suitable for reporting, experimentation, and analysis.
- Create and support Tableau dashboards and reports that can be reused, trusted, and built on centralized, well-modeled data.
- Turn unclear business questions into structured analyses that show what happened, why it happened, and the next best action.
- Work with business stakeholders and analytics colleagues to clarify requirements, define metrics, and design scalable analytics solutions.
- Help establish shared standards and best practices across SQL, Dataform, Tableau, and documentation.
- Use modern AI tools and LLM-based coding agents to speed up analytics work such as SQL writing, modeling, debugging, and documentation, while applying careful judgment to check accuracy, performance, and data quality.
What the company is looking for
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a closely related discipline.
- At least 5 years of experience in data analytics, analytics engineering, or business intelligence, with clear ownership of analytics data pipelines and models.
- Advanced SQL ability, including complex joins, window functions, and semi-structured or nested data.
- Strong understanding of data modeling and how to design tables for reporting and downstream analytics.
- Well-developed analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and communication skills.
- Practical experience with modern cloud data warehouses, with BigQuery as the preferred platform.
- Hands-on work with Dataform; dbt experience is an added advantage.
- Experience using BI and visualization platforms such as Tableau, Looker, or Domo.
- Awareness of analytics engineering best practices, including testing and CI/CD for data.
Nice-to-have experience
- Exposure to LLM-based coding assistants in analytics or data engineering work.
- Working knowledge of Python for analysis, automation, or ML-adjacent tasks.
- Familiarity with cloud environments, especially Google Cloud Platform.
- Experience using Git-based version control and automation in analytics workflows.
Perks and benefits
- Flexible working hours and a hybrid remote setup.
- Subsidized lunches in the office.
- Four extended long weekends during the summer.
- Benefits available from day one.
- Paid volunteer days, unlimited sick leave, and 3% RRSP matching.
- Work From Anywhere allowance for up to 3 months (90 days).
- Lifestyle spending account.
- Training and development budget.
- Free Kobo device plus a free weekly e-book or audiobook.
- Weekly Kobo Tech University sessions.
- Maternity/paternity leave top-up.
- Dog-friendly office.
