Role Overview

Based in Mississauga, Ontario, this full-time, on-site position as a Customs Specialist involves managing import customs clearance procedures ensuring adherence to pertinent customs laws and internal standards. Responsibilities encompass preparing and auditing shipment documentation, liaising with customs officials and brokers, addressing shipment-related issues including duties and tariffs, and collaborating with internal and external partners to guarantee smooth and timely handling of international freight. The role also requires keeping abreast of regulatory updates and contributing to customs process enhancements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily import customs clearance operations ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare, review, and manage import/export documentation accurately.
  • Coordinate effectively with customs authorities, customs brokers, and carriers.
  • Resolve issues related to shipments, tariffs, and duties promptly.
  • Communicate with various internal teams and external partners to ensure efficient freight processing.
  • Maintain updated knowledge of customs regulations and support continuous process improvements.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Extensive practical expertise in Customs Brokerage with a focus on compliance and documentation accuracy.
  • At least five years experience in Canadian customs brokerage operations.
  • Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) designation is mandatory.
  • Proven skills in handling import, export, and import-export operations with sound knowledge of customs procedures and trade regulations.
  • Effective communication abilities for collaborating with customs officials, brokers, carriers, and team members.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational capability, and concurrent management of multiple shipments and deadlines.
  • Experience interpreting and applying customs laws, tariffs, and trade agreements, specifically Canadian customs regulations.
  • Familiarity with logistics software, customs-related systems, and standard office applications.
  • Relevant post-secondary education in logistics, international trade, supply chain management, or related disciplines; additional certifications in customs or freight forwarding are preferred.
  • Experience working with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) CARM Client Portal including customs accounting and payments.
