Custodian I (Night Shift)

Overview

Liberty University is seeking dedicated Custodians responsible for upholding the highest cleanliness and sanitation standards across all campus and off-campus facilities during the third shift (10:30pm-7am). Custodians play a crucial role in maintaining safe, orderly, and visually appealing environments aligned with the University's mission by performing comprehensive cleaning and maintenance duties. This role requires adaptability, teamwork, and the ability to respond promptly during emergencies, including weather-related clean-ups and unscheduled events.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform thorough daily cleaning and sanitizing of bathrooms, including floors, toilets, walls, partitions, sinks, mirrors, showers, windows, and doors.
• Clean all interior spaces such as offices, hallways, classrooms, labs, dining areas, and communal zones using equipment like brooms, mops, buckets, and vacuum cleaners.
• Take care of exterior maintenance such as sweeping entryways and cleaning windows and glass surfaces as needed.
• Collect and dispose of trash and recyclable materials from all buildings.
• Support event custodial services before, during, and after athletic and other scheduled or unscheduled campus events, including working flexible shifts.
• Respond to urgent custodial needs and emergency situations, including hazardous material clean-ups complying with OSHA standards.
• Use and maintain proper personal protective equipment and adhere to all safety rules and regulations, documenting necessary safety data and reporting hazards promptly.
• Stock and manage custodial supplies and secure campus buildings by locking/unlocking classrooms, doors, and windows.
• Complete floor care tasks such as stripping, waxing, and carpet cleaning as assigned.
• Lead and train other custodial staff on cleaning methods, safety protocols, and proper equipment use; oversee and inspect team work, manage time records, and assist with performance evaluations.
• Coordinate scheduling to ensure adequate coverage during absences and assist with preparations and support for campus graduation ceremonies.
• Maintain awareness of and comply with all health, safety, and environmental regulations relevant to custodial operations.
• Perform occasional seasonal duties such as snow removal and handle dusty, noisy, or strong odor environments typically found in construction or demolition sites.
• Operate cleaning machines safely and efficiently, using both electrical and propane-powered equipment.

Qualifications and Experience

• High school diploma or GED required; 1-3 years of relevant custodial or cleaning experience preferred.
• Ability to work cooperatively with the public and colleagues, maintaining a courteous and professional demeanor with strong organizational and communication skills.
• Capable of lifting over 50 pounds and performing physical tasks in Virginia climates, including indoor and outdoor environments.
• Knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials, chemicals, and operating custodial equipment safely is preferred.
• Willingness to receive training and ability to follow verbal and written instructions effectively.
• Physical capability to bend, crouch, kneel, stand, walk for extended periods, and perform repetitive motions essential to custodial tasks.
• Possess valid Virginia driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and liability insurance due to travel requirements for work.

Working Conditions

• Primary work environment is climate-controlled indoors with moderate noise levels.
• Periodic outdoor work including during adverse weather conditions and athletic or special events.
• Exposure to dust, strong odors from construction materials, and potential contact with hazardous substances.
• Involves regular travel to different campus locations using personal or university vehicles.

Compensation and Benefits

Hourly pay ranges from $14.42 to $15.38, determined by individual qualifications, experience, and university needs. Eligible employees may receive benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, and tuition assistance.
