Role Summary
The Correctional Recreation Leader collaborates within a correctional team to secure the recreation building and ensure the safety of incarcerated individuals during scheduled recreational periods within a 7.5-hour shift. This role involves the execution of daily recreation programming and additional duties as directed by the Recreation Coordinator.
Key Responsibilities
- Organize and lead various recreational activities including holiday events, swimming, creative arts, and softball.
- Provide focused support for inmates who are withdrawn or resistant to treatment, either individually or in small groups.
- Assist in supervising volunteers participating in recreation programs.
- Recommend procurement of recreation materials and manage the maintenance of related equipment.
- Maintain accurate records related to recreation programs and evaluations.
- Address and report any inmate disciplinary issues arising from recreational activities.
- Temporarily assume the role of Recreation Coordinator when required.
- Support and coordinate the tasks of subordinate staff as needed.
Qualifications and Skills
- Thorough knowledge of rules and protocols for a variety of sports, games, and recreation activities.
- Strong understanding of institutional recreation program principles and practices.
- Specialized insight into the developmental and rehabilitative benefits of recreation.
- Ability to adjust techniques and practices to fit the needs of specific situations.
- Competence in supervising inmates and managing group dynamics effectively.
- Capability to train, direct, and coordinate subordinate personnel efficiently.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to establish a positive rapport with inmates and resolve disciplinary matters tactfully.
- Competence in keeping detailed and organized records of programming and participant progress.
No formal degree is required. Candidates must be physically capable of performing essential duties with reasonable accommodations as necessary.
Supervisory Role
This position may include supervisory responsibilities depending on agency requirements.
Compensation
The starting salary typically begins at $42,900 annually, with adjustments possible based on education and experience. The full compensation package can be assessed through the state's compensation resources.
