Cook Helper

Position Overview

The Cook Helper role, reporting to the Executive Chef or their designate, primarily involves maintaining cleanliness and sanitation within the culinary department while assisting in food preparation tasks as needed. This position follows established policies, procedures, and standards to ensure a safe and efficient kitchen environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Cleaning dishes, pots, glassware, and cutlery using defined sanitation standards.
• Monitoring and recording dish machine temperatures twice daily; reporting any issues to the Executive Chef or Support Service Manager.
• Proper use of chemicals in dish machine and pot washing areas, including adhering to the three-sink method.
• Supporting food preparation activities as assigned by culinary staff.
• Receiving, unpacking, and organizing supplier deliveries.
• Breaking down cardboard boxes and preparing them for recycling or disposal.
• Thorough cleaning of dish machines, pot washing areas, and kitchen floors according to schedules.
• Following departmental policies on quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control.
• Performing additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 10 or an equivalent qualification.
• Possession of Food Safe Level 1 certification.
• Successful completion of a vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check compliant with Provincial standards.

Skills and Abilities

• Capability to follow directions and quickly learn new procedures.
• Effective communication skills in written and spoken English.
• Demonstrating tact, diplomacy, empathy, and patience with both staff and residents.
• Competency in operating kitchen-related equipment.
• Good health status, free from communicable diseases and allergies related to cleaning agents.

Additional Information

This role falls under the HEABC wage levelling system, with current wages being adjusted and supplemented by the government as part of ongoing initiatives.
