Role Overview
We are seeking a Conflicts Specialist for a 12-month contract to join our Conflicts Assessment and Matter Analysis Team (CAMAT). The role involves evaluating and resolving conflicts of interest across the Firm's global operations and managing ethical screens.
Work Schedule and Location
This position is based onsite in Vancouver, British Columbia, and follows office hours adjusted for Canadian time zones: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm EST, 11:00 am to 7:00 pm PST, or 10:00 am to 6:00 pm MST, facilitating support across Canadian offices.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop ethical screens to handle conflicts and maintain confidentiality.
- Perform conflict checks for Gowling WLG's Canadian offices using New Business Intake (NBI)/Intapp systems, applying relevant case law, professional codes, and firm policies to ensure compliance in new business requests.
- Conduct detailed conflict analyses using advanced technologies and databases, judging when to escalate concerns and documenting resolutions clearly.
- Identify potential conflicts in European matters and coordinate referrals with the UK CAMAT team, negotiating straightforward conflicts with the Birmingham office and supporting lawyers with complex cases.
- Communicate conflict check outcomes promptly to professionals and support staff.
- Assist in testing and refining client onboarding and conflicts assessment processes to improve regulatory compliance.
- Maintain up-to-date expertise in legal ethics and professional responsibility across relevant jurisdictions.
- Support colleagues in identifying and resolving ethical and business conflict issues linked to new hires and business matters.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum community college diploma plus at least three years' experience in the legal sector.
- Background in customer service, information management, or research is advantageous; equivalent education and experience considered.
- Demonstrated enthusiasm for technology with proficiency in MS Office and other accounting and database software; aptness to learn platforms like Intapp, InProtech, iManage, SPM, Aderant, Harvey, and Kira.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to conduct conflict checks and apply sound judgment.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Adaptability, initiative, and resilience in a fast-paced, deadline-driven workplace.
- Ability to function independently and collaboratively within a virtual team while ensuring consistent outcomes.
- Effective time management and organizational skills to handle multiple priorities.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, negotiation, and customer service skills.
- Deep understanding of ethical, professional, and legal responsibilities including confidentiality obligations.
- Proven ability to maintain confidentiality.
- French bilingualism (written and spoken) may be required depending on office location.
