Job description

Role overview

J D Wetherspoon is hiring a Cleaner for The Castle Hotel in Ruthin, Wales. This is a full-time, on-site position focused on keeping all areas of the pub spotless and ensuring customers enjoy a clean, welcoming environment.

Pay and benefits

The role offers £12.91 per hour. Benefits include a free meal and drink while working, 20% off food, drinks and hotel stays for you and up to three guests when off duty, an extra £1 per hour for shifts worked between midnight and 5:59am, a bonus scheme worth up to 19% of pay, paid holiday, free shares after a qualifying period, a loyalty reward scheme, and the option of guaranteed-hours or variable-hours contracts.

Who this role suits

The company is looking for cheerful, motivated and enthusiastic people with a strong work ethic. No previous cleaning experience is required, as training is provided. A positive attitude, willingness to learn, reliability, friendliness and the ability to stay calm under pressure are more important. The role may suit someone seeking long-term employment or someone wanting extra shifts.

Main purpose of the job

The cleaner’s main responsibility is to maintain excellent standards of cleanliness throughout the pub, helping create a better customer experience at all times.

Key duties

  • Keep customer areas, toilets, the bar, kitchen, team areas and outdoor spaces clean and tidy.
  • Carry out daily, weekly and monthly cleaning tasks in line with operating procedures.
  • Use cleaning chemicals and equipment safely and correctly.
  • Track cleaning stock levels and inform the manager when supplies need replenishing.
  • Escalate maintenance problems and pest-control concerns to the manager on duty.
  • Greet customers politely and interact in a courteous, professional manner.
  • Complete induction, job-specific and refresher training, while supporting ongoing improvements.

Working pattern

The pub operates early mornings through late nights, so shift patterns can include mornings, evenings, weekends and late finishes. The stated weekly hours are 12, with shifts listed as Monday 05:00-08:00, Tuesday 05:00-08:00, Wednesday 05:00-08:00, Thursday 17:00-22:00, Friday 17:00-22:00, Saturday 17:00-22:00, and Sunday 11:00-16:00.

Training and progression

Wetherspoon supports development through structured on-the-job training, apprenticeships, management academies, cross-training into bar, kitchen or hotel work, and opportunities to move into team leader or shift leader positions and beyond.

Inclusion and other notes

The company states that it values an inclusive workplace where people from all backgrounds, preferences and beliefs are welcome. This role may not be suitable for under-18s because of shift patterns and lone working. Other roles may also be available, including front-of-house and kitchen positions. If applications are high, the vacancy may close early. Job reference: 657002. Closing date: 20-06-2026.
