Job description
Role Objective
The primary goal is to rigorously assess the design of a Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) switch house building to ensure it meets structural adequacy, safety, serviceability, and constructability standards while adhering to project-specific and regulatory guidelines.
Project and Standards
This role focuses on the GIS Switch House Building, ensuring conformity with UK Power Networks (UKPN) standards, British Standards, and relevant Eurocodes.
Role Overview
An experienced Civil & Structural Design Review Engineer is sought to meticulously review the building's design. Responsibilities include verification against UKPN, British, Eurocode standards, and any applicable statutory and regulatory requirements. The job requires thorough scrutiny of structural calculations, drawings, design assumptions, and specifications to validate the building's structural integrity and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Examine structural design calculations, drawings, technical specifications, and related documentation.
- Confirm adherence to UKPN standards, British Standards, Eurocodes, and specific project design criteria.
- Evaluate structural integrity, stability, strength, and serviceability under various loading scenarios.
- Analyze design premises, load mixes, material characteristics, foundation design, and structural joints as relevant.
- Assess the building's capacity considering electrical equipment loads, operational demands, and environmental conditions.
- Spot gaps, risks, inconsistencies, and non-compliance issues in the design.
- Review coordination, interface, and constructability aspects of the design.
- Generate clear, technically sound review comments outlining necessary corrections and suggestions.
- Collaborate with civil and structural designers, engineers, and stakeholders to clarify technical concerns.
- Verify resolution of review comments on updated design submissions.
- Maintain detailed records of reviews, observations, and comment tracking.
- Provide project support to ensure safe, compliant, and technically solid design approvals.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Extensive background in civil and structural design, including technical design reviews or independent engineering verification.
- In-depth understanding of British Standards, Eurocodes, and UK Power Networks design mandates.
- Experience working with industrial buildings, electrical substations, switch houses, or power infrastructure projects.
- Strong knowledge of structural analysis, load criteria, reinforced concrete, steel structures, foundations, and connections.
- Ability to interpret detailed engineering calculations, blueprints, specifications, and design documentation.
- Excellent report writing, analytical thinking, and communication skills.
Preferred Additional Experience
- Exposure to UK electrical infrastructure or substation projects.
- Familiarity with GIS switchgear buildings and integration with electrical equipment.
- Experience with independent design checks, assurance processes, and technical compliance audits.
- Understanding of UK construction norms, statutory rules, and design risk management.
- Proficient in structural analysis and design software tools.
Expected Deliverables
- A detailed civil and structural design review report.
- A consolidated register of review comments with technical explanations and recommended actions.
- Identification of critical safety concerns, design risks, and compliance shortcomings.
- Review and verification of revised design submissions, ensuring closure of pending comments.
- A conclusive technical review statement summarizing outstanding issues and the compliance status of the design.
Key Competencies
The ideal applicant will possess sharp technical judgment, meticulous attention to detail, and a methodical approach to verifying designs. Clear communication of complex engineering matters and the capacity to work autonomously while engaging effectively with the project team are essential.
Eligibility
