Job description
Role Overview
As a Cart Maintainer, you will manage the preparation, distribution, and upkeep of steel and plastic waste bins and carts. Your duties include performing curbside and communal collections, maintaining carts, and assisting municipal waste inspectors, ensuring all activities comply with City and Provincial Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) and environmental safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete notification orders documenting all tasks performed.
- Choose suitable routes for travel to and from work zones where routes are not predetermined.
- Deliver, exchange, or remove carts at designated customer sites, then transport them back to the inventory and maintenance facility.
- Conduct safety inspections and hazard assessments at service locations and while interacting with residents and internal personnel.
- Evaluate and maintain carts for serviceability or disposal.
- Adhere strictly to all workplace safety, environmental regulations, and internal procedures.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Qualification Requirements
- Completion of high school education or equivalent (Grade 12 or higher).
- At least three years’ experience in waste management or collection services, including operating relevant collection vehicles and machinery.
- Minimum two years customer service experience involving direct interaction with the public.
Skills and Competencies
- In-depth knowledge of equipment, operational procedures, routes, policies, and local bylaws related to municipal waste and recycling collection programs.
- Strong interpersonal skills with effective communication abilities when engaging the public regarding service delivery.
- Capability to cultivate and sustain excellent relationships and deliver outstanding customer service.
- Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team.
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with Vision software, Google Workspace tools (Gmail, Calendar, Sheets, Docs), and adaptability to new technologies.
- Effective time management skills, including planning, organizing, and prioritizing urgent work assignments.
- Commitment to the City's Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies, alongside fostering equity, diversity, reconciliation, and inclusion.
Employment Conditions
- Adherence to safety protocols requiring use of Personal Protective Equipment such as steel-toed boots.
- Possession of a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license with Air Brake Endorsement (or equivalent license in other provinces). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is mandatory.
- Candidate testing may be required during selection.
Working Conditions
- Physically able to perform lifting tasks using correct techniques and conform to safety guidelines.
- Capable of driving for extended hours (up to 10 hours daily) under varying weather and road conditions.
- Willingness to work overtime during high-demand operational periods.

Salary is set at $36.869 per hour, equating to an annual salary of $76,982.47.
